I have heard reference to D&M as the manufacterer of some appliances. What does D&M stand for?

Hi Kelly,

D&M stands for Design & Manufacturing; you will hear of them a lot when it comes to vintage dishwashers. Kenmore was one of the brands that were D&M-made. Personally I think D&M machines are great dishwashers to have; my grandmother had a Kenmore 18" model (since replaced with an 18" Roper which is basically the same except for a plastic tub) and the motor had a very unique sound to it. And instead of filling with the motor running like our GE-design Jenn-Air did, it filled, paused for a short time, then all of a sudden it started up with full force. You could hear the glasses clinking around as well; something I never heard with our Jenn-Air.

Thank you,
My aunt had a Lady Kenmore portable with a fold over roto rack. It had an impeller in the bottom and an enema tube that powered the Roto Rack. She quit using it because she felt it didn't clean and the tube broke off. I had a great aunt who had a Magic Chef diswhasher and my neighbors had a Caloric in the early 70's that looked Sears like inside. They were okay but if you didn't remove the crud under the door lip at the bottom it would begin to leak, lightly on the floor.

White Consolidated Industries swallowed D&M up. to my knowledge, the only machines still using that mechanical design are the 18" dishwashers under the Frigidaire & Kenmore brands. The Kenmoer offers a conversion kit and Frigidaire has both built-in and portable. Couldn't find 18" models on Roper or Estate web sites. My parents' assisted living apartment has an 18" Roper that's about 6 years old, again D&M. It was actually kinda nice to go down memory lane with this machine when I ran it a time or two.

Our Kenmore 18" DW is made by Frigidaire and makes the exact same "sounds" as described. It pauses after filling (no motor) and then WOOSH, there is a loud roar as the motor starts and sounds of some items clanking as they are hit with the initial blast of water.

Unit is over six years old and so far hasn't given any trouble. Cleans quite well, all things considered but is quite loud.
