Date of manufacture for a Maytag Model 90 Wringer Washer

I am interested in trying to find out the specific month and year of manufacture of my recently acquired Maytag Model 90 serial number 412924H if someone can help me with that information.

 

This old Maytag has travelled a long way from it's original home in the US having finished up in Australia where it has been lying idle for quite some time.  It has deteriorated accordingly but not beyond restoration which I am slowly making a start at.  The machine has had a change of motor at some stage early in it's life to an Australian 240 volt motor which looks to be quite an old unit and matches the look of the washer.  Luckily the machine is fairly complete and even though missing some parts, is still working.  It will be a long road back to looking respectable again but I'm looking forward to the task and the end result.

I have only joined this forum in recent times but have already gathered much information from the site.  I would also like to make mention and send out a personal note of thanks to fellow member Brad Ross for the loads of advice and tips that he has supplied me with.  Brad's several restorations are nothing short of first class and are certainly a source of inspiration to remind me of what can be achieved when done right.

So it looks like something is not right with the serial you've given?

I have looked at the serial number again Christina and it is 412924H, photo attached of the aluminum tub crown. When I searched the Maytag Collectors website, the serial number appears to be a valid one for machines built between the period of Sept 1927 and Jan 1930. I am wondering whether there could be a problem in me assuming that the machine was actually built as an electric Model 90 since it has not got its original motor on it but has been converted to an Australian 240 volt motor.  Would it be possible that it may have been factory built as either a Model 91 or gas engined Model 92 originally instead and could that cause a mismatch with the information supplied?

I'm sorry if that is the case, it's my fault for assuming it was always electric.[this post was last edited: 4/22/2017-06:50]

I'm afraid I don't know much about wringer washers.

I think Brad Ross might be able to answer that question for you. You should post a question or comment on one of his youtube videos. He replied to me through youtube about a round-tubbed maytag wringer washer that I got a while back.

I have actually already asked for Brad's advice on this but he doesn't have access to that information and had to get the dates from someone else for his own machines. I was hoping that someone attached to this forum had access to those records.

Just to close off on this thread, I have received an answer today from a forum member advising that my Model 90 was manufactured in October of 1928.  Many thanks to that member for their help, it's much appreciated.

Hi Stan, mine is a manual drain model but missing it's original hose.  My Model 90 as you can see is in pretty rough condition but I'm happy to take as long as it takes and make it look respectable again.  It still runs which is a bonus. Brad Ross's restoration on his Model 30WP which I think he mentions in his videos is a 1935 is the first early Maytag I have seen with a pump whereas mine is a 1928.  Not that I even knew about these old Maytags until a few months back, I'm a novice with them and have been researching as much as I can.   Speaking of pumps though I do also have a early model GE wringer washer probably of 1935/1937 vintage (not really sure of it's age) and that has a pump on it.  It's a slightly different set up to the Maytag pump in the way it connects.  Haven't got a photo of that one sorry and it's in storage.

The pump question...

If I'm not mistaken, the pump was first offered on the Model 30 (produced 1933-1937), although as an after-market addition, the pump housing could have also been attached to the Delco motor fitted on the Model A (1930-1933). However, the Model 90 had a "cradle" type of motor mount for a G.E. motor, which didn't offer a way to attach the pump bell housing with its 3-inch bolts. To further "complicate" Peter's situation, the motor was switched out to a 240-volt Australian type, which certainly wouldn't accommodate the pump as it is.

The attached photos show the original factory equipped G.E. motor for the Model 90.

Thanks for that information Brad.  That's good to know as my whole reason for wanting to restore the Model 90 is to preserve it and at the same time, keep the machine as authentic and original as possible.  Without looking at it closely, I'm not even sure what the motor is sitting on as you can only see the board and the motor is certainly nothing like the original that would have been fitted.  It appears to be bigger and is quite bulky when compared with your photos.  I must check the brand plate to see what it is.
