The Tappan was broke so the guy sent me a OLD National Batch Feed. It says reversomatic on it but does not give a Date anywhere. This disposer feels like its about 50Lbs its also the tallest disposer for the Home I have seen.I am wondering what year is this from?

my guess would be

Late 60's...thats the Hobart/KA grind wheel and ring, looks like the upper chamber is different from KA's though.
I'd also say that the motor is 1/3 or 1/2, probably 1/2 because its batch feed. the 3/4 hp motor was introduced to household disposers by Anaheim in the late 70's

I'd say at that amperage

its most definately 1/2 hp... its heavy too because the drain housing is probably cast iron, which is what Hobart used for the KA disposers as well.
How does it turn on? Twist top?

No it has a Magnet in the stopper you drop in in the V groves. For some reason that seems to not work though cause when I plugged it up it just goes.I have a 1969 Hobart/Ka repair book for the disposal so I can fix that part it tells me how to do everything to fix it.I think the switch is just stuck its a easy fix.I really lucked up on this buy he told me to keep the Nationaline/Tappan fix it if I could and I did some oil and a socket wrench and a drill brought it to life.I put a whole leamon in it and it grinds very well and has auto reverse on it but the hammers are not like yours there differnt not even like the ones in that BOL Tappan you have. There not as heavy duty as your Caloric and no red epoxy on it either.

ok

So it uses KA's Magnestart thing, thats cool. I don't know if I would use it too much, mainly because its not made from stainless steel, and water will ruin bare aluminum .
Glad to hear you got the other one running too!

Well I tried it out and it works Great but very differnt than most disposals.I loaded it up with bones, cornhusks, etc. It tore through it but it reverses like every 15 secs like very odd but the grind is the Finest I have seen. The output looked like baby food.I guess thats why they call it reverseomatic its cool I love this disposer thats for sure but I would trade it in a heartbeat for a Maytag.

reverses every 15 seconds?

I think maybe you overloaded it if that was happening. Old ISE's would do that too if the motor got to the stall point. The reverse switch would kick in and keep reversing it back and forth until the overload was relieved. Try it again with a lighter load and see how it works.

yikes is right

I've never been one to show the disposal any mercy, however I'd never put corn husks down!

I don't show them any mercy at all.It says in the instructions that cornhusks are a go it says these disposals are meant to be filled and started underload the back and forth operation is normal I have a repair book that talks all about the grind system in these. It has a current sensor in it and does that to keep from jamming and improves grinding. It also says Artichockes are a go also but not string, clam, oysters shells.I put cornhusks,Tee-bones,Paper towels,wax-paper,Tea-bags down my Viking all the time jeff the way they grind with the slots undercutting the grindring it cuts them up just fine. The Vikings or the old National/Ka disposers are the only ones that I have found to not have a problem with cornhusks.Your Viking says it also in its Papers Do grind Fiberious material Cornhusks and Artichokes.

ugh

My Viking ain't all that and bag of chips... I'll post the pics tomorrow to prove that.
I'd rather have a Waste King.

Maybe its cause I have the Old HEAVY Viking is the only thing I can think of.Yes I LOVE My SS5000 They put such a great design in it uncutters center ripper but why no Auto reverese it just wears that one side of the cast ring.If they were going to do that they should have used that Carb-loy cutter like on the G.e. Induction machines that is the hardest stuff I have ever seen I couldnt sharping it drill it or anything.Even on Waste-King Commercail they dont use a reverse feature which I think is Lousy considering that the rings are 500 Bucks...

I have been not happy sevral times with a certain disposer.I have altered them with some J/b cold weld and a busted up grind ring from a Old Ise classic that was broke. You would be very shocked what some sharp spikes welded to the sides can do.That Cold weld is amazingly strong and inprevious to water I can dilute it with finger nail polish remover and paint the parts that will rust Its so light that even on the grind wheel it doesnt cause any vibrations.I took the idea from the G.e. High speed design which is ingenious cause there is nothing to dull over time like all the others. There is that spike on the side and of course the shear speed of it does the grinding but it seems to help big time with any disposal.I have even improved my Viking by making the primary breakers larger.I don't know why I haved to take everything apart but I have always done that sence I was little but at least now I don't have parts left over.:)

used to

have an ISE PRO77, I thought that disposal was the S**T too! It was quiet, ate just about anything, and was fast. What I hated was the corrugated one-piece splash guard, and how it would erupt like a volcano sometimes, soaking whomever happened to be in front of the sink.
So I installed a vintage Waste King SS3300 and LOVED it. Still though I wanted a Viking and so I ordered one last year. Its ISE made, with a cast disk and ring. I modified the mount to the WK clamp mount using their 3 bold mount and splash guard.
Its ok, noisier than the ISE, and SLOW as molasses sometimes! However I do know it is chewing the stuff up and has never given me any problems.
Until last week.
I threw in two banana peels and hit the switch. The thing made noise and really seemed to be gnawing up the peels. However after a minute or so the sound did not diminish, so I stopped it and reached in. Here's what it did to the two banana peels:

this is the first tangle that came out... there was more inside yet!!
Never had any problems with banana peels before, I wonder why now these would not be chewed?

yes the Viking it to be replaced...I may just put my old ISE back in.

Jeff I can't beleave that. The only thing I can think of is that the primary Breaker bars are worn which dont make much sence. There the ones that stick up higher than the rest. There are some minor differnces though in mine than yours.I know that the Hammers are more rounded in yours than mine cause the grind wheel is a tad smaller mine has 48 teeth and yours has 45 but that shouldnt be a problem.Have you checked inside the unit?I had one like yours but it was the one with the button I dont think they were that differnt.I got rid of it about two weeks later cause I found the one that looks like the old K/a unit and got it for 200 Bucks so I didnt have alot of time to use the Ise made one.You ever thought about trying to attach the housing of your old W/k that fit to another one you have?Would your G.e. Fit your sink they are Fast as hell but loud.I know I ask you ? after? but there is a OLD True Value at the thrift shop you know who made that and is it any good I have it on hold but if its a Tappan or something I might let it go?Oh yea the Evolution Excel is VERY quite can barley hear it but they could have done better there is not much starting torque at all.

Jeff do you know what year Ise stopped using these grindrings. Also did they ever use Fixed Hammers with this Grindring?Every Ise I have seen now uses thoese cheap stamped crap the Excel is alot better but they could have used a W/k setup.

I am also disappointed that ISE stopped using very VERY durable and effective cast shred rings in favor of the LAME stampted steel ones that bend and corrode.the cast ones had GROUND cutters and the stampted ones do not.Disposers are getting CHEAPER made these days-that older National machine looks like a FAR better unit than any made today!-and it looked like the flywheel was cast iron or steel rather than zinc which wears and corrodes.Long live that National!

ISE

discontinued the cast ring in their household disposers about 1995 maybe?
Originally ISE's were all cast, disk and ring with fixed hammers. The last models to have the cast disk and ring were the old model 707 and 107, discontinued about 1980 and replaced by the classic.
I have not decided what I will install here yet, I also have an Anaheim Whirlaway I could reinstall, but those were so damn loud!

I have found one Ise that still has the Cast Ring and its on the Do-it Hardware site. Here is the link http://doitbest.com/Garbage+Disposers-Emerson-model-E505-doitbest-sku-413712.dib Thanks for the info I have been wanting a OLD Ise but dont want to get that same s%$^ they have used forever what is really nuts was some guy bragging about his one year old Kitchenaid 1H.p. that he paid 400 bucks for when the Kenmore is the same. They know that most consumers are stupid for the most part.

Yea the Flywheel in my National is Cast-Chromium,Nickel,steel Same for the grindring. The rest is cast Iron the chamber is painted for some reason but the drain housing an't.I dont see how I could ever install the thing with out a floor Jack it is heaveier than my Old style Viking.the way it grinds is neat though reversing like that.It grinds a little better than the Viking also but that maybe cause it has what the Manual calls a High-bulk cutter in the center.I think I will just hold on to it though till I find my Maytag..
