Date this National Disposer

The Tappan was broke so the guy sent me a OLD National Batch Feed. It says reversomatic on it but does not give a Date anywhere.This disposer feels like its about 50Lbs its also the tallest disposer for the Home I have seen.I am wondering what year is this from?

National Disposer

I vaguely remember looking at a National Disposall Pamphlet when I was around 10, so I would say early to mid 60's. 1965 ?

Jeff do you know when this was made?Why is it they never put the horsepower on them back then.I thinking its a 3/4 or 1/2 I guess.

my guess would be

Late 60's...thats the Hobart/KA grind wheel and ring, looks like the upper chamber is different from KA's though.
I'd also say that the motor is 1/3 or 1/2, probably 1/2 because its batch feed. the 3/4 hp motor was introduced to household disposers by Anaheim in the late 70's

Thanks alot.Its says 7.9 Amps on it but thats not a reliable guess on power.They dont bulid them like this no more that is for sure.

I'd say at that amperage

its most definately 1/2 hp... its heavy too because the drain housing is probably cast iron, which is what Hobart used for the KA disposers as well.
How does it turn on? Twist top?

No it has a Magnet in the stopper you drop in in the V groves.For some reason that seems to not work though cause when I plugged it up it just goes.I have a 1969 Hobart/Ka repair book for the disposal so I can fix that part it tells me how to do everything to fix it.I think the switch is just stuck its a easy fix.I really lucked up on this buy he told me to keep the Nationaline/Tappan fix it if I could and I did some oil and a socket wrench and a drill brought it to life.I put a whole leamon in it and it grinds very well and has auto reverse on it but the hammers are not like yours there differnt not even like the ones in that BOL Tappan you have.There not as heavy duty as your Caloric and no red epoxy on it either.

So it uses KA's Magnestart thing, thats cool. I don't know if I would use it too much, mainly because its not made from stainless steel, and water will ruin bare aluminum .

Well I tried it out and it works Great but very differnt than most disposals.I loaded it up with bones,cornhusks,etc.It tore through it but it reverses like every 15 secs like very odd but the grind is the Finest I have seen.The output looked like baby food.I guess thats why they call it reverseomatic its cool I love this disposer thats for sure but I would trade it in a heartbeat for a Maytag.

I think maybe you overloaded it if that was happening. Old ISE's would do that too if the motor got to the stall point. The reverse switch would kick in and keep reversing it back and forth until the overload was relieved. Try it again with a lighter load and see how it works.

I've never been one to show the disposal any mercy, however I'd never put corn husks down!

I don't show them any mercy at all.It says in the instructions that cornhusks are a go it says these disposals are meant to be filled and started underload the back and forth operation is normal I have a repair book that talks all about the grind system in these.It has a current sensor in it and does that to keep from jamming and improves grinding. It also says Artichockes are a go also but not string,clam,oysters shells.I put cornhusks,Tee-bones,Paper towels,wax-paper,Tea-bags down my Viking all the time jeff the way they grind with the slots undercutting the grindring it cuts them up just fine.The Vikings or the old National/Ka disposers are the only ones that I have found to not have a problem with cornhusks.Your Viking says it also in its Papers Do grind Fiberious material Cornhusks and Artichokes.

Maybe its cause I have the Old HEAVY Viking is the only thing I can think of.Yes I LOVE My SS5000 They put such a great design in it uncutters center ripper but why no Auto reverese it just wears that one side of the cast ring.If they were going to do that they should have used that Carb-loy cutter like on the G.e. Induction machines that is the hardest stuff I have ever seen I couldnt sharping it drill it or anything.Even on Waste-King Commercail they dont use a reverse feature which I think is Lousy considering that the rings are 500 Bucks...

I have been not happy sevral times with a certain disposer.I have altered them with some J/b cold weld and a busted up grind ring from a Old Ise classic that was broke.You would be very shocked what some sharp spikes welded to the sides can do.That Cold weld is amazingly strong and inprevious to water I can dilute it with finger nail polish remover and paint the parts that will rust Its so light that even on the grind wheel it doesnt cause any vibrations.I took the idea from the G.e. High speed design which is ingenious cause there is nothing to dull over time like all the others.There is that spike on the side and of course the shear speed of it does the grinding but it seems to help big time with any disposal.I have even improved my Viking by making the primary breakers larger.I don't know why I haved to take everything apart but I have always done that sence I was little but at least now I don't have parts left over.
