Kelly,

They say, "when it rains it pours." I'm sorry to hear of all the difficulties you've had to face last month and most of all, you have my prayers for a return to good health. Glad to know you are busy with projects and moving forward!

Stay strong and may the New Year bring you many blessings!

Kelly, I am so sorry to hear of your recent health problems.  I am sure that December was not the happy month that it should have been for you.  I had checked with Pete and also Greg about you as we had sure missed you here.  Just take really good care of yourself and don't try to do to much!!  Remember you come first!!!  Be sure to keep us posted.

Oh Kelly...

I'm so sorry to hear of this news. I can only offer the same support that you gave me during my cancer battle. I'm certainly here if or when you wish to talk. I suspect that you are too humble to see this but you truly are an amazing person and a great inspiration to so many of us! Don't ever stop being you!! :-)

Warm healing hugs :-)

Rich

Kelly,

The kitchen looks amazing already. That Shane is a fast worker - all that in one week! It looks like it is going to be great when completed. Glad you like the dishwasher and was so happy to find it for you. It sounds like you are in good spirits again so take each day one at a time and hopefully all will go well.

Week?

Shane is amazing, one beer and $30.00 per hour and we did the kitchen in two partial days, saturday mostly morning and Sunday after church. Wall cabinets and new disposer on Wednesday and then he'll install the counter top while I am at Swedish the first week of February. An energy auditor is coming on Thursday to see where we need to concentrate to get winter heat bills under $1,000 a month. He looks like a white haired Dick Stevens.

What a month you have had.....

Kelly thank goodness for your new kitchen nothing like having a goal toward something one really wants.  I hope your health rapidly improves. I hope the family issues, soon get resolved, if they are much like ours they are all good people they just can not get along together.  The pressure of dealing with aging parents is a stressor many of us identify with, but not while dealing with chemo, you are one  strong man.  alr

Kelly...

It's very hurtful to see you go through this.
I do know what chemo does I am a surviver of that awful process.
A Big Big Healing HUG to you !!!
You will be back with a vengence.
Shane must be a great person, there nothing like a someone who stands by you in crisis...best to him.

Take it easy the kicthen is looking great !
Maytag reverse rack dishwashers are the best LIKE...

Kelly, is Shane available for hire for long-distance jobs? It's handy to have a handy-man in the house.

3,200

The house has 1,580 SQ FT on each floor. There are two finished floors and an unfinished 3rd floor. The down stairs has a stairway in the center but the rest of the space is open which forms a living, dining and great room concept with French doors on each side. We have a large propane space heater and augment with electric oil filled radiator style portables. The propane heater can heat the whole house but the addition of the electrics makes it more even. Whether propane or propane and electric the end result is about the same. Without electrics the 500 gallon tank needs to be reilled ever 3 to 4 weeks. Running the heaters makes the propane last 5 weeks but at the end of the day, the total costs remain the same.

As I recall, your house is in the country, so your heating options are probably limited. Is a wood stove an option? I also live in the boonies, and I know a lot of people out here heat with wood. If one has access to wood, and the patience to chop/cut/split, wood can even be free.

Even if one pays for wood, my thought is that at least the money is staying local, not to some energy company CEO sitting on beach someplace.

Another thing about wood is that it works when the power fails. I guess I'm getting older too, but after that storm last week, with massive power failures which apparently even included suburban areas, I'm thinking that when I move again one thing on my priority list will be some sort of electricity independent heating system that I can use in emergencies if no other time. Even a fireplace is better than nothing.

Another wood system heating that's a little easier to live with is pellet stoves. A neigbhor who mainly heats with regular wood has a pellet stove, too. It's worked well for him and his wife. (His wife mainly--she apparently doesn't like dealing with regular wood.) I'm not sure about the pellet costs--but it may be cheaper than electricity or propane.

A final option that one of my uncles does and probably would heartily endorse: move to Arizona for the winter!

Energy Auditor

It turns out the house is wrapped in a soft steel and hard foam substance thought to be superior in blocking wind. The problem is actually quite simple in scope and it is the first good news we've ever had with the house. The metal studs and batting insolation run from the ground level to the third floor. They are not capped and act as heat chimneys carrying the cold air in like a wind. 2 inch hard foam will be cut and fitted into each stud channel and then foam over the top. The auditor also drew a form on how to build an insolation box to cover the opening to the pull down stairway. I have a call into a contractor for a bid but also feel confident Shane can do it if he has time. The auditor believes it will make the house more comfortable and cut heating cost as much as 50%. The dealership returned the Lexus today after repairing the body damage I did when I hit a guard rail early in the day before wreaking the Town Car. Its nice to have wheels when you're 13.5 miles from town. I am letting out sigh after sigh of relief that must have been compressed in the stress of it all.
