Brought home a nice one today. Got the pair but the dryer is gas, and seller stated it had a gas smell so he stopped using it. I dont have a gas line to test it or repair so I may part it out.

Washer opened up and cleaned out the dust everything looks great inside. Pulled the agitator and cleaned up the caked on wax from fabric softner overload.

Tub without agitator

Question for the experts.....the screens on bottom of tub are for lint removal. They are almost clogged. Are they supposed to come out for cleaning? Or should they be replaced?

Washing on Super Wash

Next question...Super Wash, without an owners manual for this, how does this function work? Is the light supposed to light up?

Top of the line PLUS?

Does anyone know if this is TOL or is there one model higher? Wasnt sure if this came with available fingertip faucet.

2 more above this one

Hi there-- I have the brochure this washer is listed in. I bought the model below yours-- the LAT9704 in March 1996. I wish I still had it-- I got the urge to try a front loader in Jan 2004 and gave my Maytag to a neighbor-- she is still using it and going strong.- I moved in June of this year and got rid of the front loader as it would not fit in the new house's laundry closet. I have a whirltag now-- its ok, but not a real maytag for sure.

But to answer your question, there are 2 models above yours-- the LAT9824 which has 4 wash spin speed selections, and the 9904 which has touch pad controls and you can customize cycles-- as best as I can remember is cost about $1,000 back in 1996. I paid $579 for my LAT8074-- a model below yours.

I thought about asking my neighbor if I could have my old machine back-- LOL- but I'm not good at working on washers (or much of anything else for that matter) so I'll keep my new one. My washer and dryer are upstairs as well and I sure don't want a leak.

Lint screens

Jaytag, I have a newer version of your washer with the same lint screens. Just pry them off their seat (bend them inwards a little bit, they come off fairly easy). Then wash them with a soft brush under running warm water, use a little neutral soap if necessary. The curd accumulation cleans out without much effort.

I do this on my washer about every six months, keeps them fairly clean all year 'round.

Why???

Why in the world would anyone design a machine with lint screens under an agitator and expect that the normal consumer would even know about them nor would they be able to get the agitator off to clean them? What happens when they are full? No lint removal from the water and spotty clothes? I am not being sarcastic in the least, but please explain the logic of this? I had a similar problem when I learned that my old WP had some fancy kind of lint filter thing under the inner tub that was supposed to remove the lint too. Must have worked since we rarely had a problem with it but by no means was it ever intended for the user to clean it!

This is the model my mom had until they sold the house in 2002, she got it in late 1995 or early 1996. It was Circuit City's TOL Maytag. In the legitimate lineup, it was next to TOL. The TOL basically added the 4 speed combinations. I actually liked the energy saver switch. It yielded in 6 wash temps and I loved that flexibility. The hot with energy saver switch ended upp kinda being like "Medium" temp was in the mid 1950s. The Super Wash was simply an extended wash, I think it ended up being 18 or 20 minutews total on the wash cycle. And yes the little light is supposed to come on during that section of the cycle dial. I have the 9824 dryer. There are times I regret I wasn't able to get someone to drive me down to Houston and get the washer before they moved so I could have a matched set. But, I love my Fridgemore frnt loader.

lint filter...

the lint filter in these and later Maytags was self-cleaning. Somehow, during the spin, the water backwashed and took the lint down the drain. (I am sure that some of the 'Tag experts here can refine that answer, but I think that is basically how it worked.)

Lint filter

those lint filters are really not effective. as mentioned, I have the model below yours and when I bought mine, I also bought the agitator lint filter and fabric softner cup( like the old style as older models had) never have a problem with lint. Im sure the agitator style lint filter is still available if you want better filtering for your Maytag. I would check into it.

The lint filter in question is usually "swirled" clean by Maytag's famous Swirl Away drain system. In my Maytag Dpendable Care washer I have the filter in the agitator as well and the PowerFlex 12 agitator. So if you think about it there are 2 filters in my washer. Never have a problem with lint. I have not used the washer in over 3 years now and she just sits in the basement waiting for the day I decide to hook her back up. Great machine.

We had the Fabric-Matic version of this machine when mom moved into her current house. It went up in smoke one day though, wouldn't drain, I know now that something had simply lodged itself in the pump! I miss that washer dearly!!!!!!

Super Wash Fix Question

So, the light does not light up when it is on Super Wash. When I set it for SW, it agitates through the full cycle. I would like a soak/wash action. Any ideas on a fix for this?

superwash..

is a extended wash time cycle. It doesn't alternate with wash and soak periods like Prewash does.
my sugguestion is, let it wash briefly, and stop it after a few minutes and then turn it back on later.
