Dexter Double Load Washers

Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Dexter Washers

Funny thing.... know the EXACT laundromat that these are /were in. It's on Lovett St, in Charlotte Michigan. Imagine a place where these were predominate, probably 25 or so supplanted by about 8 TRIPLE load Milnors, and about 15 Speed Queen solid tubs in IIRC an (burnt) orange color, gold and like a creme white. The place was DEFINITELY remodeled in the early 70's. Best thing was that, he had TONS of parts for these machines in the shop next door, which also was well known in that area for fixing both vacuum cleaners, and bicycles; but ironically NOT washers/dryers etc... Bought a few older vacuums from there too. All can say is, that, while HARD used, they were definitely WELL cared for... At least 25 years ago anyway....LOL!!!

There is a laundromat in the Atlanta area that still has the double loaders in Avocado and Almond color still chugging away.  They are also still in very good shape.  The dryers have all been replaced within the last 15 years or so.

When Did they Stop Making These?

They stopped making these in 1990.for those of you who don't know these are bendixes. The big question is are they gravity drain or not.In the 1980sand 90s there were a lot of Laundromats in my area that had these and I used to love to go use them on a Sunday,so much fun.I used to go use one just like the green one in the earlier post I goddamn love that machine, reminds me of a girl I knew at the time who broke my heart into many millions of pieces. She used to love my stories of visiting Laundromats.

Of course, they have to be bolted to the cement and they only spin at about 400 rpm. If installed on a wooden floor, holes were drilled through the joists. A steel plate was placed below the joists and a bolt long enough to go through it was anchored in place from underneath. The machine was placed over the bolts and then nuts were used to hold the machine's base to the floor and connect it to the plate under the joists. It used the tub from the original 36" Duomatic.

are they gravity drain or not, and "have to be bolted &#

These were gravity drain if remember correctly. They all sat on a concrete riser about 12-14 inches high off the main floor, with the drain trough in between them, and all bolted as described. Used them several times , and washed wonderfully. Much better IMHO than the triple load Milnors, which today, with Electrolux branded FL's are predominate in my area....

Dexter

Just wanted to thank Launderess for posting these I have wanted one for 30 years.I don't know why nobody is jumping on these they are so cool and the guy Gary is really nice and told me his family has owned the Laundry since 1947 and they originally had diving bell bendixes.

Gravity Drain

I have talked to Gary again and he told me there is a pump kit for this machine so it will pump the water out which is great news I wasn't sure how I was going to configure the drain setup.

@bendixmark

Good job! Congrats! Always happy to assist a fellow member!

Think the bolting down and having to "sink a pit" or come up with a draining solution due to lack of pump kept other members away. It certainly caused me to lose interest; cannot see drilling holes through floor joists! *LOL*

The 220V power also would be an issue as am fresh out of outlets.

Drain pump

Drain pumps are easily installed on these machines.I put a pump on mine in 1990.The machine is still in use today. It is a workhorse! and does a great job.I have 2 more in the back room . one of them is the stainless steel model.Great machine!
