Westinghouse SUF-4D had a main wash time of only 4 minutes. Is this real? Did such a thing even exist and if so how was it even put to market?

Yes, neighbor across the street her dishwasheer had that sequence but her model also had the opitonal power boost (heating up the wash water) which she always had on. That turned the wash into like 30-50 minbutes.

Go look in Eogemera 1960 built-in Westinghouse brochure roll-out dishwasher and that's what my neighbor had, that specific mod3el.

Wow!

Do you have a link?

I like the concept of not having a detergent drawer however the wash system, no rack rollers and short wash time I think made it lack luster. I'd love to have this in the power clean version with a 45 minute main wash time.

Its almost like a commercial dishwasher, those have about 90 seconds on the main wash.

What was the water charge?

Was the detergent stronger, water force stronger or both? Having a 20 minute cycle is kind of nice I must admit.

Whoa! Wow! I can't thank you enough!

Did this machine actually clean? I've never heard or seen of such. I purposefully don't count the first 60-90 seconds of a fill as the water pressure isn't strong enough and the pump pulls in air- but technically you are correct the 90 second fill is part of the wash sequence. By the time the pump pressure is strong enough and the detergent is dissolved thats only about 4 minutes. That is just bonkers lol! I notice the higher end models had longer main wash times and/or a thermal hold. I never liked the fact they reserved realistic main wash times for high end models. Very unfair and I've always felt this bordered on criminal. So many companies did this and all it did was punish people who had common sense and/or were less privileged, kept people down, increased cost, wasted energy, wasted detergent, ruined the environment.

Personally I would not have used a purge but rather extended the main wash time such that cool water could be heated to at least 140*F. Even with piping hot water a purge is unrealistic- the tub, dishes, pots, pans and the like would still pull the temperature down significantly. A purge could flush any detergent which fell to the bottom of the machine ending up in the purging water stream, grate or sump. A detergent pod or tablet would dissolve and be flushed away if it fell into any one of those areas. A 90 second drain (like Maytag) would have been a better solution, but even that gives me qualms lol.

@steve- do you know anything about this model? Was it a latter model? Did the water charge change? 12 minute main wash is more realistic and on par with the day.

Reply number nine basic Westinghouse dishwasher

Hi Steve, thanks for posting. I remember that model dishwasher didn’t see very many of them. Most builders went for the little bit fancier one with an exposed timer.

These first Westinghouse dishwashers with the drop door cleaned beautifully they rival whirlpool and KitchenAid and cleaning performance unfortunately the door ability was poor and they had all kinds of problems they would clean dishes.

Note the dishes did not have to be pre-rinsed to get good cleaning in these early quick wash machines however they could not have badly dried on or cooked on food as that would not come off as it does in dishwashers today.

We used to use beach house in Bethany Beach Delaware that had this Westinghouse dishwasher along with a water softener. That thing would get everything clean. It was amazingly effective.

The earlier phosphate laden and chlorinated powered detergents, cleaned really fast, but they would edge class wear terribly, which is why you couldn’t have long washed periods.

Rival Whirlpool and Kitchen-Aid cleaning performance? Whoa!

Now that you mention the detergent being caustic I can understand the purge and short wash vs a long fixed main wash.

I kind of like the concept Westinghouse had going overall. Very elegant.

I think Whirlpool PCs and Kitchen Aids and Westinghouses with a fixed 45 minute main wash would work beautifully with today's detergents.

Water Usage

11.25 gallons of water total would mean 2.5 gallons per water charge and 1.25 gallons for the purge. Not bad, not bad. A Power Clean had a water charge of around 2.2 gallons IIRC.

Any idea why they then went to two post main wash rinses? Did they just increase the water charge to 3.75 gallons per fill? Or they did find a way to get away with one rinse?

Steve that was the exact dishwasher neighbor across the street had, but kitchen was in seafoam green. The racks were pink and the silverare basket was that color.

Steve, that's a lovely dishwasher! Congratulations! If you're ever selling it, let me know! I've got a 60 Westy range and a 59 Westy fridge (2nd photo). While I always liked those, I'm I really would like the portable. Does anyone have any leads on a PDW-103? Photo from automatice.org/
