Let's start with the fact that there is huge user error involved here. I, myself performed an undisputed I.D.10T error.
Here goes:
Our "pop" fridge is an ABSOCOLD 10 cu ft apartment refrigerator. It is a terrific budget fridge and does indeed still get absolutely cold after over 15 years of use.
For Thanksgiving I put the pop in the fridge as usual. Unfortunately I set the cold setting to 4 which ensures something will break. This is a single-door fridge. Both my Crosley single-door and this Absocold will freeze things in the fridge compartment if set too cold.
But here is the odd thing. I went downstairs and found pop cans torn in two, upside down and literally thrown about the interior of the fridge.
However it was only the DIET PEPSI that blew. All else was ok. I had Pepsi Throwback, Ginger Ale, 7-Up.
What gives with DIET? Or was it a coincidence?
Comments?

The sugar is an effective anti-freeze. Here in MN I often leave the pop in the garage. Sugar sweetened pop can endure outside temps down to 0 deg F (it is a bit warmer in the Garage). Diet sodas will be in jeopardy by about 20 deg F.

I have blown cans in half in my freezer before when attempting speed cooling!

Must I turn in my card?

Oops, It's been too long since I've seen Mommie Dearest. I don't understand the joke.
However, I am now tasked to watch the movie... I'm way overdue.

And THANKS to Kb0nes for diagnosing this strange vessel failure in my pop fridge...

Well . . .

In the movie Crawford cusses out the managing directors of Pepsi after the death of her husband Alfred Steele who had been chairman of the company. She threatens to ruin Pepsi, it's enough to make Pepsis everywhere explode in fear.

BTW I found kb0nes's explanation quite interesting as well, I'd never thought of that but then I've never had any sodas explode in a refrigerator.
