Dishwashers: Tall Tub vs Short Tub

I recently replaced my 1996 Maytag dishwasher. I called the repairman that I always use and asked him what was the main thing I needed to look for in my new dishwasher. He said get a short tub. Not the new long tub. He said less repair. I didn't ask him to explain. Does anyone know why he would have said that? I am curious now.

No idea. I've had several tall-tub dishwashers and none of them had mechanical problems (Frigidaire, Maytag, LG). Both the Frigidaire and Maytag dishwashers had mother board issues, but they weren't related to the tub size.

I wouldn't trade the flexible capacity of a tall-tub! There were some complaints about items in the corners of the top rack not getting clean in Whirlpool-made dishwashers awhile back, but I think they've been resolved.

I have had both but liked GE's (GLD4400) the best. It retails for around $400 and has a full size spray arm under each rack (upper and lower) as well as a "whirly bird" sprayer on the roof. it filters out 100% of the wash and rinse water 100% of the time and I never had to pre rinse or put back anything that was not thoroughly cleaned. everything sparkled and it was very quiet.My second favorite was a regular set model by Whirlpool. I liked the silverware basket on its door.that one was a convertible.

I don't think I've never seen a "short tub" dishwasher in all my life if I exclude the old machines seen here!

I've seen "standard tub" machines, where the door is as long as the front, for 82 cm (standard undercounter height) and "tall tub" at 87 to 90 cm in dishwashers designed to be built-in in "modern" kitchens that have "oversize" counters to hold them.

It's the first time I'm listening to such a thing that "short tub" machines are more reliable than "tall tub" ones, to me the guy told you a completely untrue lie, not very professional!

And think that if you're going to get a short tub machine you're never going to put in 33-34 cm plates or serving trays in them, thing that you can easily do in any bigger tub dishwasher!

My repairman must have meant 'standard tub' because a regular ole dishwasher is what I have vs the new tall tubs models that have been out a few yers now. I have an older lasy friend that did over her kitchen except keeping her dishwahser which is a standard model like mine and her new dinner plates won't fit unless you load them at an angle. She keeps talking about replacing all the appliances in the kitchen and I told her if she does to go to the appliance store and check out the dishwashers with the tall tub AND to take one of her dinner plates with her and play with the different machines.

Big Hands

All I can think is that your repairman may have big hands.  Getting your hands underneath a tall tub machine for servicing is a challenge in itself.  Found that out trying to install one.

Malcolm: Come to think of it he does have big hands. Noticed that when he cam to check out a small rattle in my Bosch compact stack unit. He looks like he could have played football at one time. Guess that comes in handy. He got down on his hands and knees and turned a little screw inside this little door and the rattle instantly. I was embarassed that that was all it was, but I was afraid to ignore it for fear it might damage the machines. Don't think he was too impressed with my HE machine. He did say that he thought it was better for the HE machines ona concrete loor rather that what I have in my kitchen. Anyway, as the world turns and burns!

Malcolm, you are so right.  I installed our new KA tall tub and I don't know what the manufacturers were thinking.  My hands are fairly narrow and I had a heck of a time connecting the wires and hoses.  I guess if the machine ever needed new parts, it would have to come out of its place.  Maybe it would have helped if your repairman maybe was in the band rather than on the football team!

Well, he'll come right out when you call. His dad was in the app;iance repair business also. There reapir business is about the last of its kind where I live. Before that we used a man for years that was a big big fan of anything Maytag. He didn't sell the, just believed they were the best. At that time my mom was sold on anything GE. He finally passed away and we were sad. I remember my mom commenting: What will we do now that Mr. Ritchie is gone?

Tall tubs in Europe

Tall Tub DW in Europe exist only as integrated machines, there aren't freestanding models available.
Despite most of kitchen cabinets are today higher than the old standard 85 cm. Europeans stick mostly to standard size DW. People don't know Tall Tubs exist and kitchen furniture retailers aren't so clever to push people towards tall tubs

My sister has a G2XXX tall tub Miele : those 4 cm of added height are really worth the 50 € more than the standard size eqivalent model G1XXX.

BSH makes some talltub models. depending on the country they are sold as Bosch, Neff, Siemens and Gaggenau

Bosch Machines

The Bosch Dishwasher was by far the easiest machine I have ever dealt with as far as installation goes.  It slid right into the opening and the water and electrical connections are made on the front of the machine base.  Also, the base of the machine is relatively solid which helps it contain most motor noises.  Pretty nice machines for the pricepoint.

Well 75% of the short tubs have a lot more power but I doubt he was talking about a close out Kenmore Ultra Wash/Whirlpool Power clean.That is one of the best systems that was ever made I am partial to old Kitchenaids though.I know some stores will charge extra HH Greg Samsung./ L.G. dishwasher's if it takes to long or they can't get it in there cause if your like me I put new floors in my kitchen ever 4 or so years but I don't yank out the D/W,who is going to see it? These new Dishwasher's pump like 10 gallons a min versus 60 for you Moms machine. I do love my G.E. Monogram D.W. I got last year it washes great.Finnish is the only Detergent that I have found that works they have improved there formula unlike Cascade(it seems) but I still have to put 1/8th Ts of Phosphates in the main wash cup.
