Dishwashing Liquid Dosing Question

I am sure that my asking a question about dishwashing liquid in a group that collects and enjoys household appliances may seem a bit odd.  More odd still, is the fact that while I am an avid reader and a sporadic poster, I do not own a dishwasher - I have never used one.  I grew up washing dishes by hand, and have done so my entire adult life.  Currently, the lack of a dishwasher is due to lack of space in the kitchen, but this is all beside the point.

 

When I moved out on my own those many years ago, I used the original Dawn dishwashing liquid - non concentrated, as that is all that was on the market at the time.  About ten years ago or so, when tweaking the budget, I began using Ajax dishwashing liquid, and have always had good results with the product.  The price is certainly good, too.  Tonight, while doing the weekly grocery shopping, with a few extra bucks in my wallet and dishwashing liquid on my list, I thought I would pick up a bottle of the ultra concentrated "blue Dawn," to see what it is like. 

 

I am stymied.  I am not used to an ultra concentrated product, and there are no dosage instructions on the bottle.  A search on the internet failed to provide the information that I need.  Does anyone here use the ultra concentrated Dawn, and if so, how much do you use for a normal load of dishes?

 

While I am asking questions, of those of you who wash dishes by hand, what liquid do you prefer, and why?

I cant help with dosing, as I buy the original blue non-concentrated Dawn

I wash dishes

by hand, and I really don't miss a dishwasher, and don't really want one! But I probably the odd man out!

Many here wouldn't be without one, and quite a few here are interested in the restoration of vintage dishwashers.

That said, I use my own soap formula I make for hand dishwashing, but if I buy, I like Ivory the best!
The ultras, I question as to how "ultra" they really are?

When i handwash dishes I use the dawn ultra concentrated. I don't measure i just open the bottle and squirt some in the sink. It usually cleans really well in my opinion.

I don't like putting pots/pans in the dishwasher, so those always get handwashed.I also like lemon scents.

Sunlight is excellent but I haven't seen any recently, so it has to be Ajax or lemon Joy. Actually, Ajax seems to work about as well as anything and it is inexpensive.

I use the concentrated Dawn, works great, remember it is concentrated, so you use less to get the same results.

Lemon Scents: A Caveat

If you like lemon or other citrus scents, there's something you should know:

They're great for most things, but they can harm real silver, either plate or sterling. The acidity of the citrus scent is the culprit.

Even then, mere washing in them won't usually hurt silver, but soaking silver in these products will put a whitish haze on it. That haze has to be buffed away, which removes silver. Obviously, sterling won't present much of a problem there, but with plate, you've only got so much silver to work with, and any buffing will remove silver you can't afford to lose.

All this having been said, Ajax in the grapefruit scent is my liquid of choice. The orange and lemon scents are also okay. But the lime? FEH!

Lime scent

I actually like lime fragrance. Years ago, Benckiser made a Finish "anti-bacterial" rinse aid which had a lovely fresh lime fragrance. Very clean and fresh it was.

I don't like their current "Lemon" rinse aid scent - it's got some kind of cinnamon undertone to it, and it is vile. I would like to know just who the bloody idiot is that thinks up these superfluous fragrance combinations?

I'm normally a great fan of lime scents, but the one in American Ajax dishwashing liquid is absolutely vile, and more than a little sick-making. I cannot put my finger on what the trouble is, but the stuff is nas-tee.

By the way, I concur on cinnamon. I know most people love it, but I can take it only in very limited doses. A bakery with hot cinnamon rolls is an olefactory nightmare for me. And the hotcakes at McDonald's - which are made with the horrid stuff right in the batter - leave me calling for Ralph and Huey.

Is this the one, with bleach?

Maybe the bleach scent (chlorine, or something else?) has distorted the fragrance of lime.

Dwan/Dosing

Give it a squirt, if you need more give it a little more of a squirt. If too much, don't squirt so much next time.

A bottle will last me about a year this way, but I only do pots and pans the rest goes in the DW
