I know all of us like to repair washers and dryers and now I have to make a decision.  "Walter" is a Whirlpool direct drive washer from 1992 that I did several repairs on and had served my sister and her athletic husband for 30+ years.   She noticed that it no longer spins or spins very slowly, he will agitate just fine.  I found out (is this correct?) that the problem is in the transmission and a new part will cost over $200.

Becky (sister) is going to get a brand new Speed Queen front loader and at first we were going to keep Walter until he stopped spinning.  Then I told her it was OK if the dealer took the old machine away because of the high cost (and I don't know how to replace a transmission anyway)

One the day of delivery, turns out there was a lot of drama!  Two guys came from the appliance store and at first tried to lift Walter out of the basement but the 2 got into a bad argument about how to put it on the dolly and the machine fell on the floor and the cabinet came off.  I have the feeling both of them may get fired.  She had the store deliver because I might have a hard time and I thought the delivery guys would handle it better than me and Mike.

Now SQ is not coming until Monday so I have the weekend to make a decision to keep and repair or give away Walter.

Is there any demand for an old washer machine that uses lots of water, that it would be worth it to repair and try to sell?  Also, Mike has a lot of athletic clothes that come out good in this washer but might not in an economical one.  I recommended a FL because she has a lot of spreads but was planning to keep both machines and now I wonder if Walter is too far gone.

Thank you in advance for answering.

It may just have a worn out clutch, however if the clutch is slipping because the transmission is leaking oil, you may need to replace or rebuild the transmission as well.

33 years is pretty good life for a top load washer if they have the ability to purchase the new Speed Queen front loader. I think they will really like it to say nothing of the savings in power and water usage cleaner and better, rinsed clothing, etc.

If the cabinet came off the whirlpool while it was being moved, it takes extra attention to straighten out all the bent tabs and bent up cabinet to get it to securely stay in place in the future compounding the work of the repair that the machine needs.
