There is always discussion of removing soft drink machines from schools because of sugar, weight and health issues? Yet those $1.00 candy bars, kids sell door to door, and their parents lug to work for us all to buy, as school fundraisers are a wonderful thing. Am I missing something? In our state the schools get a cut of the Lottery, Legalized Gambling, and Income taxes? Where is the MONEY???? alr2903

Everywhere but within the school system!

If our city done right with the lottery monies, all our schools library would be full of books and every school either rebuilt or replaced since we are about 30 years into the lottery system!!!

Agreed.....

I remember my dad snidely saying when the California Lottery started...'sure, the schools will get money. After everyone is paid well out of the "operations fund", there will be very little leftover for schools'.

And so it is, Dad right again. Kind of like that March of Dimes scam.

As far as kids selling those candies, what irritates me most is coming out of a store and having some kid--regardless of color--doing a whole "ghetto" thing on me to buy his warmed over grubby chocolate. Ugh. Little girlscouts, ok. But these big dopey teenaged kids?

Why don't they get a job and they and THEIR PARENTS can pay for their team uniforms and travel fees OUT OF THEIR OWN POCKETS.

I never understood that. My son loves RC flying, but I don't have him out trying to get others to pay for his interests.

Man, guess I am cranky tonight!

The schools in Iowa (back in my day, at least - I don't know about now) were well funded without a lottery, but we still had to sell candy bars for band trips and stuff like that, the idea being we should "earn our fun". (I come from a town with a lot of poor people - the kids who worked did so because their families needed the cash).

I'm not crazy about the kids that hang out outside the supermarket either, but since I used to be in those shoes I usually help them out - but I make them work for it. I question (nicely) about their group, what they are raising it for, what they do in the group, yadda yadda yadda. I have turned into that annoying adult I used to worry about becoming when I was a kid ;-)

One place where we had an advantage over these Washington state prudes was bars: In Iowa, a minor can be in a bar as long as there is an adult there willing to claim responsibility for them (the minor still can't drink, of course). That is unthinkable here. Back in Iowa, we would hit all the bars, The American Legion, Elk's club, VFW, etc and clean out our boxes in an evening. Drunks LOVE candy, LOL...

In Ohio.....

Schools are funded primarily through real estate taxes, and the lottery money does come to schools, but not enough to run the schools, however.

Since the lottery, however, it is a lot harder to pass a tax levy, even renewals that won't increase the rate.

I come from a long line of teachers and administrators, and they all agree(d) that we need a new way of funding public education. So has the Ohio Legislature, but various plans get sidetracked or otherwise waylaid.

If it is a child I don't know, I have no problem with saying a polite "no thank you," and gently closing the door.

My nieces are of college age, so I don't have to worry about this anymore.
