I have to replace a garbage disposal in a rental house built in 1964. One plumber told me that the sewer pipes were such that the garbage disposal should be used minimally. The current tenant is an elderly lady who does very little cooking. Do garbage disposals differ in how much they grind up the food waste? Does it matter? Are there any models that should be avoided? Generally, I look for things at Costco, but I haven't seen any garbage disposals there lately.

One suggestion

Have the kitchen drain professionally cleaned before putting in any disposer...from the sink to the sewer.

Even a low powered modern disposer will put more through the line than a disposer that has been dying.

The ones today are NO GOOD.The Viking which is $350 grinds the best they used to be alot better but ISE makes them now but they still have the same grind system.Stay away from any NEW Kenmore,Maytag,Kitchenaid,Ise Badger. They all use the same terrible grind system and stop up my lines so bad they had to be redone. The New Evolution series from In sink erator are better The Best one being the Excel which is about 250 bucks. They are alot better but the short of it all is that NONE of them really today is good. The Waste kings are LOUD and the Click all the time and it drives me UP THE WALL.They do grind better than the ISE but the noise is BAD.There are some older ones on EBAY there was a OLD Hobart type Viking on there for 350 but you haved to live in California so you might want to look into it.The old ones are huge HEAVY Machines. The powers to be today and the bean counters have ruined everything just like any other thing they are made to die when the warranty goes and the performance in the mean time is AWFUL.Trust me I have about 10 differnt brands from the good days and they are all made like a TANK.If your in No rush I would wait and watch Ebay for a older New just stay away from any ISE Made anything unless its made before 1980.I would get this VIKING if the cost is OK here is the Item number on EBAY.....Item number: 150191597092

something to chew on

Pardon the pun...
I would avoid any of the ISE badger models, they are kinda crappy, and there is no stainless steel in them. You could buy the ISE evolution compact model and have a decent disposal.
Another good choice would be a GE or Waste King middle line model, just check the features to make sure the disk and ring are stainless steel. Non SS models get pretty gross fast, and the teeth and disk just rust away, causing more problems down the road.

Lord help 140 Bucks to install it?Was that your first disposer?Did they have to run the wiring and everything or did they just replace a broke one?I have one of thoese Evolution Excel and I haved to admit its the quitest disposer I have ever heard.Heck I can't talk about accidents I blew my left leg off cleaning a shot gun cause I was watching Will&Grace.

No probably about it

YOU can replace that disposer yourself, and save the $140 for something else.
First, is the disposal you're replacing and ISE or made by ISE? if it is, you won't have to change the sink mounting, AND the plumbing outlet will line up as well. All you'll need to do is the electrical work, disconnecting the old disposer and wiring up the new one.
Disposers made by ISE include: Kenmore, Whirlpool, Kitchenaid, Maytag, Crosley, Emerson...

Let us know how it comes out

Volsboy1, This is a replacement, so there is nothing to do with the wiring.

hoover1060, gee, I don't know what brand the old disposal is, but I know it has been there for at least 23 years.

Now, I sort of wish I had arranged to do it myself, but the plumber is coming tomorrow. The drain is slow, too, so he'll use a snake on it. I'm glad the ISE Evolution will be quiet.
