a laundry detergent called "American Family Flakes"? My Mom used to use this all the time before they stopped making this brand and then switching to Tide. She also used La France with American Family Flakes for many years - I think early 60's. I looked at Robert's collection online and some others but didn't see the laundry detergent on the shelves in their collections.

Just thought I'd ask......Mike

My mom used that detergent for years, I just don't remember it being flakes. Do you also recall that there were coupons on the back worth so many points depending on the size of box. You would save up these points, send off for their catalog and then get things free. Much like trading stamps. Seems like I remember my mom saving up for a set of stainless silverware. Good memories!

Believe American Family was a Chicago brand bought by P&G in the 30s and phased out by the 50s. I don't think the brand made the transition from soap to detergent. It was a "premium" brand (like Breeze or Bonus, later). Last vestige of Kirk's Soap Company is Kirk's Coco Castile soap (which isn't P&G any more and isn't made in the US any more)
