This is meant for both Imperial and Deluxe memebers: does your washer match your dryer? If not, why?

In all these years I have only had four matching pairs and for a short time: First set was a 1992 MOL Kenmore washer and dryer my parents bought from Sears as a discounted set. Technically speaking the dryer may not have been an exact match since it was more TOL then MOL having a moisture sensor, drum light, front lint screen, infinite temperature selection, lint filter whistle, ect- but then again I know little of how Kenmore paired models of that era. When we moved this set went into the basement as the home already had a much earlier BD washer and a GE dryer.

The second set was a BOL 1997 GE washer and dryer. I will spare you your innocence, but after I destroyed the washer washing pillows, I was celebrating. Kenmore took its place, followed by a variety of washers thereafter as that was the peak of my restoration of, and interest in appliances.

Third set was an Estate pair that came with the condo, 2005 ish?- history unknown. The washer crapped (stopped spinning and the tub somehow dropped several inches) in 2010 and was replaced with a new 2010 Maytag Center dial. I choose that washer somewhat by desperation- somewhat by wanting a center dial. I needed a washer fast and my go to local appliance store had one in back they could deliver that same day. I originally wanted a TOL center dial- but the one speed was all they had at that moment in time.

Which brings us to my forth set. When the dryer started making god awful noise, I decided on replacing the whole thing with a 2011 Maytag central dial. PC Richards had some really nice black Friday sales going on. 40% of on various models including several Whirlpool dryers. Seeing the center dial was one of them, I said why not? It had the drum light I so desperately wanted and would match the washer.

That all ended in 2013 When I decided to get serious and get a Speed Queen. For a while I have mulled a matching Speed Queen dryer, but the Maytag dryer is doing a stellar job and I see it lasting at least a few more years. As is from what I have read the SQ may not dry as fast.

All in all I rarely having matching sets because I find the best dryers and best washers are often separate brands and separate models. If I had to buy a new set today, I would probably pick a Speed Queen front load a Commercial Whirlpool such as this:

Similar for the Kitchen: GE stove and Micro, Kitchenaid Dishwasher, LG Fridge, ect.
 
I have used both matched and unmatched and variations in between (say, same brand, but different levels in the line or vastly different years of manufacture).

 

Since I rent the place I live, and I don't have my own equipment, I pretty much am stuck with what is provided for me. My one hope is that the equipment at least gets the job done...and sometimes even that seems like an impossible dream...

 

If ever own my own washer and dryer, I probably wouldn't worry about matching the set. By having different washer/dryer, one can get the ideal match for one's needs.
 
 
No machines prior to 1992, without a house.

1992 KitchenAid matched pair (760Ws).

1999 Fisher & Paykel matched pair (GWL08, DE04).

2004 Fisher & Paykel mostly-matched pair (IWL12, DEGX1 which matches better to GWL11).

2008 went askew when the Neptune TL came in mid-year.  Then the Calypso in November.

So currently, Calypso washer & F&P DEGX1 dryer in the laundry room.
 
<span style="font-size: 14pt; color: #008000;">I think there are three reasons the store I worked at while in school accumulated so many trade-ins so quickly, and I mean there were a lot. This was no Home Depot or Lowe's. The three reasons were Harvest Gold, Avocado and shaded Coppertone. Those white appliances in customers' homes were passe'. I think this is the reason I saw so much used laundry and kitchen stuff come it that had nothing wrong with them. On this topic, a lot of perfectly fine dryers showed up where the matching washer needed something minor...a new pump on a lot of Whirlpools and Kenmores or a poly pump on a Maytag. A white, yellow or turquoise appliance would be gosh in the same vicinity as one of the new fashion colors. It really was the "golden age" of used appliances...and great fun too.</span>

I've had two matched sets.

 

April, 1978 GE FFlo next to TOL washer and dig load dryer with electronic sensor.  Speed clutch failed on washer and gave the pair to homeless shelter.

 

October 1986 Lady Shredmore pair in almond.  Dryer motor froze up December 7, 1994 and got the TOL mechanical control Maytag Dependable care dryer in white.  The dryer will be here 23 years next week. 

 

2006 Steve 1-18 brought me a Frigidaire Gallery front loader that he had refurbed.  In late summer 2011 it began making the dreaded bearing rumble.  I replaced it December 2, 2011 with the WP Duet WFF97HEX.   

 

When the LK dryer died, I decided I no longer needed to keep up with the Jones with matched sets. 

 

My 2 houses in Houston hd all almond appliances with black glass looing oven doors on both stoves.  My current kitchen only had all black glass/chome appliances that all looked coordinated from May 2007 when the 1980 Almond Kenmore fridge died.  I'd had black paneled dishwashers from 1986 until (thus all chrome/black coordinated look after 5/2007) until the new SS Kenmore Elite arrived late October/early November 2015. 
 
Actually never had

Our first dryer was a Miele, but it was a white facia model. Our washers at that time were brown facia models (both same model, 4 buttons on the left side of the control panel next to the soap drawer, 3 dials: cycle, temp, timer, in that order).
The dryer actually came a few years after the washers (one or two years I think).

The following washers were a Miele W961 and a Priveleg Sensation 9415 (basicly ELux). With these running, the dryer was replaced by a Miele T7644C.

Then washers cycled (Miele W3241, Panasonic NA148VG4, AEG L71670FL, Bauknecht Super Eco 6414).
The Miele's all were different series (the T7xx being a match to the W1xxx series, and the W961 is far older).
Then we got the Bauknecht TK Super Eco 72A++ which runs till today. While our washer is a Bauknecht as well, they are different series/levels of salesprice.

Other washer then got swapped for another AEG (L61670FL).

Here while studying we have a Gorenje Slimline SensoCare washer with 1400rpm and a Bosch heatpump dryer of the earlier generation.
 
My parents currently have a matching set, the washer is a 1999 Kenmore by Whirlpool, the dryer is a 2004 Kenmore by Whirlpool. They had an early 80s Kenmore dryer before, and they got the new dryer just before the consoles were changed around 2005, so they match despite being about 5 years apart.

I don't think my parents ever had matching sets before. At their old house they had a Montgomery Ward by Norge from sometime in the 80s, and a 60s or early 70s Kenmore dryer. When they moved, the new house had a late 80s GE Filter Flo washer but no dryer, so they used it and brought the old Kenmore dryer over. The washer started leaking so was replaced with the 99 Kenmore and the dryer was replaced with the 80s Kenmore. Both of those dryers were still working fine when they were replaced and the Montgomery Ward washer was fine when they left it with the old house.
 
We were talking about this at work the othere day

Co-worker said that she has only had one matching set in her life. That was the set she got when she was first married. After that the machines have been replaced as they broke down, about two washers for every dryer.

I on the other hand, am too anal, they have to match. So I'm not realistic, I'm frivolous with my money, I will never have a nest egg to leave my heirs--good! At least the washer and dryer match.
 
Harley-- LOL, same with me. It would make sense, logically, to replace a single appliance as needed or to purchase the top-rated washer and pair it with the top-rated dryer...but that will probably never happen with me, either.

For instance, I know that if I plan to switch to a Speed Queen front-loader, I'll have to do it before the new console color-scheme changes. And since I'm becoming fond of the top-loader--this surprises no one more than me--it may be here for the duration.

Oh, well, yeah ... I currently have three other non-matching washers other than the Calypso that I can use at any time (not in the laundry room) -- F&P IWL12, Maytag Neptune TL, Whirlpool "Gold" DD.  And a GE portable.
 
I’ve owned several matching washer and dryer sets over the past 43 years.

Out of these 11 sets my favorites, in order were the 87’ Westinghouse set, 16’ Maytag Cenntenial set, 97’ Frigidaire FL set, Magic Chef TL set and the 12’ GE TL set. The rest of them were either so-so, or just not good for one reason or another.

I know, I have a sickness for laundry appliances. My addiction eventually lead me to this website of kindred spirits.

I’ve a matching Miele W1 with TwinDos and it’s glass door T1 dryer on top.
 
Growing up, we never had a matched pair. In fact, for a while, we didn't have a dryer at all -- wash was either hung on the line, or, if the weather was bad, everything went to the laundromat.

Bought my first set in 1992, a Whirlpool set. The dryer was actually one model level up from the washer, but visually they matched. When my wife and I got married, we sold her mis-matched Norge pair (the washer was on its last legs), and kept the Whirlpools. But she never liked the DD washer much. In 2006, we got a GE Harmony pair, in charcoal, and we still have them.
 
Everything I've bought and owned has been matched. As another poster on this thread; I'm anal about it.

My family, on the other hand:
1969: Mother bought a TOL Speed Queen dryer, but a MOL washer. She had looked at a TOL washer in Avocado - was leaning heavily toward purchasing it - but there was no Avocado dryer to match the washer. The dryer she got was white. There was no white TOL washer to match the dryer. Thus, she got the MOL washer so that the colors would match (The venue was a local furniture store that had a limited stock of appliances on the side. My surmise is that some customer bought an Avocado TOL dryer, and another bought a TOL white washer on the same day we came in). All my begging to get her to purchase the perfectly matched Coppertone MOL Maytag pair at the same store fell on deaf ears.

1984: While I lived with my Grandfather, a new Shredmore Design 2000 24" unit was picked out by me and purchased by the family to replace my Grandfather's 1964 Westinghouse stacked Laundromat, and that broke up *that* set, since a new Westy was deemed too expensive. And so, the remaining 1981 Spacemates dryer stayed around until 1999 and was replaced by a BOL Hotpoint. That deed was done before I could intervene and purchase a used KM dryer to match the washer which was still going strong.
 
I think my mom got a good deal on a fuller-featured Maytag dryer, which could have even been a floor sample or a display model (a later-purchased Tappan range with microwave clearly stated it was & had quite the wear 'n' tear to show, right-down to stickers and signage, stating "Hi, I am/may be", w/ the anthamoprophic appliance, bruised, banged and bandaged introducing the bargain-bought-stove as such)...

So the Maytag washer bought months earlier, was clearly a BOL, though mostly on the basis that it was only available in White, seeing as how it boasted in-demand features like the 3 water levels and 3 temperatures...

Needless to say, the washer had a white timer dial and blue backguard, while that fancier dryer, was a chrome dial model with gold backguard...

Grandma's White-Westinghouse dryer had only one temperature, no air-fluff, and manual timer, vs. the Kelvinator dryer, owned before, which had a probably never-used heat-off on, while each washer mated with was a K-Mart/GE Filter-Flo (well, left-opening lid and Hotpoint-styled knobs, vs. standard rear-opening lid and toggle switches--maybe bought there at not her nearby one, but one that sold appliances, if not some bargain-basement type outlet) then a WCI Frigidaire, boasting water levels and temperatures, 3-each with the latter actually featuring a warm rinse with its hot wash...

I guess I can go on with a lot of mis-matched laundry brides and grooms, differing in brands and offered features, right down to a BOL Kenmore white-backguard washer, next to a more upgraded black-backguard Kenmore dryer, sitting on a lawn, for sale...

I think the reason I’ve been so intent on having matched sets is because we never had a matched set at home. My parents always bought MOL, sometimes BOL appliances, and never a matched set or color, just white, unless they were built ins already in the home when they bought it.

My Mom only had two dryers between 1955 and 2004 when she passed away. The first was a 55’ Norge Timeline and in 62’ it was replaced by a almost BOL Whirlpool, and that dryer sat on an open porch, exposed to the elements all but the first year she owned it. I think my stepfather replaced the element at least 3 times and the belt probably about that many times too. The washing machines we had when I was a teen and doing laundry were a 63’ MOL Whirlpool, 69’ Maytag Wringer E model with a pump. Then in 72’ she went back to an automatic, Kenmore MOL and her last machine was a new Maytag MOL in 98’. But she never had a matched set.

Made me just have to have matched sets, most of the time.

Taut (Mistake)

Oops, I meant FORMER, as in the GE had the Warm Rinse w/ its Hot Wash, while the remaining temps' rinses were Cold, while the later-Frigidaire had all cold rinses with its washes, and to clear up about the old Kelvinator dryer, the Heat Off toggle switch (right out o fa parts bin) was its only luxury feature--the dial otherwise gave 120-minutes of heated drying, while the later White-Westinghouse only gave (forgot how many minutes) heated dry...

yes, but....

my current (Elux) and previous (Frig 2140) were both of necessity in a stacked configuration, so more or less one is confined to machines of similar make, so that the stacking kit works. The Frig pair will be twelve years old in a few months and has never had a service call. I gave the pair to my neighbor when his old Kenmore TL broke and could not be repaired. I bought the Elux pair in Nov 2014, so far three years of flawless service.

My laundry area is in the garage, along the rear wall in an alcove, with water heater and furnace adjacent to the laundry machines. To comply with city ordinance, there is a bollard (concrete-filled steel pipe) embedded in the floor slab, to protect the appliances from a car in the wrong gear. A runaway car could sever three gas lines (furnace, dryer, water heater). The builder situated the pipe directly in front of---and in the middle of--the washer space, so that it would block any FL door from opening, even on a pedestal.

The only solution---while remaining compliant with city building codes---was to stack a pair in the dryer space. I used the washer space to place a small table (holds laundry baskets, etc), and used the wall space above the faucets/standpipe drain to mount a small storage cabinet to hold supplies.

My first machines were a horrid WCI set from Costco in 1998. Dryer ok, but the infinite water level setting on the washer broke half a dozen times. I bought a new GE pair in 1997, and donated the surviving WCI dryer to a homeless shelter that needed a spare dryer---at that point I could have purchased only the washer and kept the dryer, and was the only time when I could have had a mismatched set. In 2006, the GE washer broke beyond repair and I bought the Frig 2140 set, which had to be a set due to stacking issue above. I gave the GE gas dryer to my neighbor, who was using an electric Kenmore dryer and who wanted to switch to gas to save $$$, as electric rates here are high and gas is cheap. In 2014, his Kenmore washer broke, I gave him the Frig pair (no service issues) and bought the Elux (60 series pair) for myself. One nice feature is that the Elux can wash all of my (queen) comforters, which didn't quite fit in the Frig. No more laundromat trips!
 
Currently have a BOL Hotpoint washer and a GE dryer.Works for me!Guess they are related,but not "matched".The GE washer went for the DD Kenmore-wished I had kept the GE washer-like the Hotpoint had the rim-flo filter and was dual speed.
