Dog Urine

I need some advice:

When I was in my spare bedroom working out this morning my 8 month old Bischon Frise decided to relieve herself on the comforter in the other spare bedroom. It looked like she peed a gallon. Funny thing was she didn't do her little pee pee dance prior to doing her dirty deed.

I washed it prior to coming to work this morning in the Duet HT. Checked it after the cycle ended. The stain is gone but the smell is still there.

Any suggestions to get the smell out of the comforter?

By the way I have not dried the comforter yet. I plan to re-wash it tonight when I return home.

Go to a Petco or PetSmart or Pet Store

When I used to work for Just for Pets, we had a product I think was called Nature's Miracle or something. They may have something different now. You'll have to read the instructions as I don't know if it goes in the wash or is a pre-treater.

Twenty-Mule Team Borax. I have used it for years, it will get cat and small child urine smell out of anything. Clorox 2 powder will work too, but not as well.

I use Natures Miracle and there's a few other brands on the shelves at PetSmart etc...all enzyme based. My old dog Parker the Barker is having his name changed to Parker Pees-a-lot. Big thanks for ceramic tile flooring.. he just can't hold it as well anymore so it's a morning routine for me these days.

Removing Urine smells...........

For what it's worth, I have a cat that, when upset, leaves me a smelly urine puddle to clean up. I've always used Baking Soda. About a cup or so, added to regular laundry detergent, gets out the smell. I have a front loader and the Baking Soda dissolves well with a minimum amount of water.

I have also used fabrize (spell.) in the washer too. About a 1/2 cup in the fabric softener dispenser also helps to eliminate the animal smell.

Oh yes I do miss the Febreze odor eliminator that was made to be poured into the waher. These days all I see around here is the spray-on stuff.

The Baking Soda makes sense; adding an alkaline/base to an acidic substance chemically neutralizes it to a salt + water.

Of course you already know this, but kitty's litter box has to be scrupulously clean and empty or she[ll gift you with puddles and solids elsewhere. Also, use of ammonia is off-limits. To cats it registers as pee and says "pee here".

Febreze

I went to Kroger and got some of the Febreze Laundry odor eliminator at lunch. Got a $2.00 coupon on line. If that doesn't work I will try 20 mule team Borax.

Like to have never found the Befreze laundry odor eliminator. It was at the far end of the detergent isle. You would think it would be where all the laundry additives are.

That's exactly what you do in this case.

You can't "eliminate" the smell of urine. The urine-smell will dissipate over time, but again, it's through chemical action/reaction that will reduce the smell.

You can cleanse the area so that the "substance" is no longer present, but you can't eliminate the smell, as it's a chemical residue (of the ammonia). The only way to remove the smell is to "neutralize" it chemically; alkaline base is added to an acidic substance.... and in enough quantity that the base is greater than the acid.

It's the same principle as when you add milk/cream to your coffee.... you reduce the acidicy from the coffee.

It's just Chemistry 101

I am guessing this is why people who are sensitive to acidic foods can better tolerate a meaty tomato sauce but not a plain Marinara; the meat appears neutralizes the acid in the tomaotes.My father can't tolerate acidic sauces. So when cooking for him I take an unflavored TUMS (Calcium carbonate anti-acid pill) and stick two right in the pot of tomato sauce. after if foams and froths, *LOL* it is nearly undiscernable in taste.

Anyhoo, back to our regularly scheduled program. I'm surprised our resident Launderess has not chimed in. Chemisty and she are best friends, IMHO! Where ARE you girl?

I wonder if lemon juice is of any use in certain cases. It is used to deodorize fish and fowl in the kitchen. May not be such a good idea as I thought I heard it is used as a natural hair bleach as well.

Frebreze laundry odor eliminator

Man this stuff rocks!

Washed the comforter again last night with the Frebreze odor eliminator with a warm wash. No trace of the urine is there! No stain! No smell!

O My God--if FL/s used enough WATER, the pee would be gone, smell and all. I've always had cats, and they only (rarely) peed anywhere except in their box unless the had a UT infection which they caught outside. I do, however, need help with cat hair, which accumulates on my bed as soon as I come home from the laundromat with my comforter. I CANNOT make them not sleep with me!

Enough water

I think that may have been some of the problem Monday when our dog peed on the comforter the first time I washed it.

The gentle cycle on the Duet HT it fills with more water then on the normal cycle during the wash and rinses. The comforter is a queen size which took up almost all the room in the wash tub. I don't see how anyone could wash a king comforter in these machines. King size bedspread maybe but a king size comforter I think wound be a bit much.

White Vinegar

I've found that white vinegar in rinse water is very effective at getting rid of most doggy odors. I do the first rinse with vinegar and do a second with fabric softener and have had great results. I learned that trick here on the website...
