I have a 1960 Lady Kenmore Automatic Dryer with a Dole natural gas burner. The relay is not working on the natural gas burner unit. I tried to find a replacement burner with no luck (Sears Part No. 636549 - Dole Burner) Has anyone had any luck retrofitting a new gas burner unit in place of an obsolete one? It is a 3-wire controlled burner unit.

Sears also lists a White Rogers replacement burner with the part no. 236762 - also no longer available.

The pilot lights, but the gas will not come on and it is followed by the loud clatter of the relay. Aside from this all the components of the dryer work perfectly.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

What you need is a new blower belt. The pilot doesn't have enough draw to brint the pilot flame forward to satisfy the pilot switch. You do not need a new burner.
If you put a new belt on make sure you oil the wick in the blower bearing. You cam=n pop the wick cover off and saturate the wick. This will work!!!Regards kenmoreman.

1960 LK GAS DRYER

The blower belt is not the problem if the drum is turning and a good current of air is being blown out of the dryers exhaust, this was a frequent problem with later models that had a separate blower belt. I am very familiar with this and even much older WP built gas dryers, if you want to Email me and include a Ph # I can explain several options to get this dryer safely heating again. PS thats a beautiful dryer.

Thanks Again Combo52!

I really appreciate your time and information this morning!

I took the burner unit apart and disassembled the pilot unit. The main jet inside the pilot unit has 2 small holes, well one was approx. 50% clogged and the other was 100% clogged. I was able to get both clear, I cleaned out all the ports on the pilot head, and reassembled the unit, and it works perfectly. The pilot was coming on, but not getting hot enough to trip the flame sensor.

Just finished drying a load of clothes in it and it worked 100%! Thank you again!

1960 LK GAS DRYER

You are very welcome Kurt, and I have now learned that the pilot burner can be saved. Back when we worked on a lot of these dryers we just replaced the pilot burners, now that these parts are extinct it is good to know that they can be saved, so thank you, and even though I have a lot of experience fixing appliances I have often said I learn something new every day.

It may sound funny.... but when I saw the jet unit was an aluminum/magneseum alloy, I lightly sanded off the excess oxidation from the outside with 1000 grit sandpaper, then put the jet in a pot of hot water and cream of tartar and put it on the stove to boil - 10 min later it was bright and shinny like new with 2 clear open holes. the cream of tartar disolves oxidation off of alum and mag parts.

So as silly as it sounds - I boiled my pilot jet clean!

cleaning pilot holes

I had a pin vise and a number drill set (came across it the other day), and I used these tiny drills to clean out pilot holes, mostly in stoves but also in dryers. I would use a drill that was obviously too small, then step up in size until I hit shiny metal. Classic stoves were a big seller, and I used these drills a lot. Get a set- a cheap one is fine as this is not precise work. One suggestion, make sure you have a place for them. The index case is very small and I would misplace them.

Great Job Kurt!
Fantastic looking Lady Kenmore!
Is it true that the burner output on this dryer is 37,000 BTU's?
Talk about a fast dryer.
