We have a double Thanksgiving this year: Thanksgiving proper will be, well, proper: Friends and neighbors for a traditional dinner.

Friday, we're doing a second Thanksgiving for members of the crew of John's train that come in that morning, having worked on Thanksgiving Day. It will probably be a more raucous crowd, and should be a lot of fun. But I think I will be done with Turkey by Friday night :-)

The good news is that doing a second Thanksgiving really isn't all that more expensive than just one - The local supermarket has a buy one/get one thing on Turkeys this year, and the rest is basically starch.

Anybody else have a weird Thanksgiving coming up?
 
Nope.... nothing weird here!

Just the standard Turkey day here.... well, standard after a 6 years hiatus. The last time I hosted and cooked for Thanksgiving was about 6 years ago (I think).

I spent a day and a half cooking everything from scratch... from soup all the way to desserts! That was a big deal for me because THIS year will be only the third time I have taken on such a challenge!
 
I need a drink NOW! *LOL*

Not this year, but G-d bless the gay bars on Black Friday (the day after Thanksgiving). Always loaded to the gills due perhaps to so many people having seen their families.
 
Nothing too unusual here, just had to postpone it until Saturday (11/29). My older sister and family can't come up 'til Friday. My b-in-law has an uncle that has terminal colon cancer, so they are spending the holiday with his family as a kinda last fling.
 
My roommate is a bartender on a gambling boat and has to work on Thanksgiving. So I will be fixing dinner on Friday instead for him, his mother, and myself. I will be going to friends on Thursday for dinner, he didn't want me to be home alone on Thanksgiving.
 
Dan, I'm having a double Thanksgiving, too!

I'm preparing and taking most of the T-day meal for 19 to my nephew's in Minneapolis.

Several friends who aren't able/don't want to travel to be with family are coming over for Thanksgiving on Friday.

Needless to say, tomorrow and Wednesday are going to be HUGE food prep days.
 
No huge food prep for me. I am doing this thing as simply as possible:

Two turkeys, one for each day.

A huge thing of dressing put together Wednesday night, half to bake one day, half to bake the next day.

Two bags of potatoes, one for each day.

Two pans of rolls, one for each day

Two cans of cranberry sauce, one for each day,

One big bag of frozen vegetables from Costco, split in half, to go for both days. (But at least I'll cook them stovetop. No microwaving them. I'm not that lazy yet.)

Two apple pies and two pumpkin pies from the bakery down the street.

I used to go all out for Thanksgiving, but I got tired of all the leftovers and waste. After all, It's much more about getting people together and having a nice time than having a million courses, right?

And in my experience, as long as you set a pretty table, and keep the wine flowing, you can skimp on the food ;-)
 
I am cooking once, on Thanksgiving. My sister and her daughter and son and dog and cat come up from Ridgewood, NJ so let the bitches handle the meals after that for my 80 year old father and their own selves, I hope to go skiing in Vermont.

But thats just me.
 
Most of the family is going to my cousins in Howell, NJ.

He is having a Roast Turkey, and also a deep fried one. ( Which I never had and been wanting to try). Homemade Italian Wedding Soup, Mased potatoes, candied yams, plus a whole lot of veggies.

I am making homemade apple pies and pumpkin pies.

Making a turkey breast for our own house too.
 
Well Dan, day 2 sounds like the fun one for sure!

We may have as many as 12 people and it will be our first TD in our frighteningly inadequate kitchen. The only capable aspect is the new Electrolux Icon professional range. It should crank out the 22# turkey in record time using convection.

Thursday and Saturday--

Thursday, I will be blissfully alone (well, Boris T. Catt...), and Saturday will be the Family Reunion Thanksgiving Potluck.

I am making the crannberry-orange relish, a corn casserole (one WITHOUT Jiffy Brand Corn Muffin Mix,) and Cinnamon Glazed Walnuts (as a nibble). It's going to be most of the day, and fortunately, not here in my apartment. There's going to be 20-30 of us. One of my cousins is involved in some sort of fraternal lodge thing, and can get the social hall. And kitchen.

Will be the first time I've seen some of them in over five years, and it might be a good time.

Please forgive me for asking as this bit of "Americana" is new to me. I'm all excited to be making my first one WITH said muffins. How does one do it without?

Even THAT gets sour-cream.

Non-sequitor: (Still freaking out at the amount of dairy the typical /stereotypical American consumes............

For me it goes on:

Toast
Baking/Desserts
Potatoes
Corn
Yams.

Period. )
 
I don't want to throw cold water on this thread but, my Dad just called 1/2hr. ago that the last of my paternal grandfather's sisters died last night. She was 100, and had dementia for the last couple of years. So Thanksgiving will be a little somber for our family this year.
 
Baked Corn,

1/4 cup melted butter
1 can cream style corn
1 small can evaporated milk
1/3 cup sugar
1 tsp. cornstarch
2 eggs, beaten

Pour melted butter in the bottom of a small casserole dish. Mix remaining ingredients together, pour over melted butter. Bake 1/2hr. or until set @ 350 degrees. Set casserole in a pan of water.
 
Polkanut, sorry to hear about that!

Haven't had a family since I was 19, so I'll be working 'til 4:30 and then going to spend the evening with my neighbor and his mom. I'll make one pumpkin pie and one pecan pie to bring over (but crusts will not be from scratch... not a lot of time this year, so I'm cheating).
 
Corn casseroles

Here's the one with Jiffy Brand Corn Muffin Mix:

13x9 glass baking dish- sprayed with non-stick spray
350F preheated oven

1 can (15-16 ounces) whole kernel corn, drained

1 can (15-16 ounces) creamed corn

2 eggs, beaten

1 box Jiffy Brand Corn Muffin Mix

1 stick (4 ounces) butter, melted

1 cup sour cream ("light" will work, but don't use the "fat free")

1/2 teaspoon garlic powder

Shredded Cheddar Cheese, for topping.

Mix all except cheese. Pour into pre-sprayed baking dish. Sprinkle with cheese. Bake at 350F for 30-45 minutes.

Rosemary's Corn Pudding (The one I prefer. Less sweet, more fresh corn flavour.)

9 inch glass pie plate
350F preheated oven

2 tablespoons butter

2 eggs

2 10 ounce boxes frozen corn, thawed

1/2 cup chopped onion

1 1/4 cups evaporated milk

3/4 cup shredded Monterey Jack cheese

1/2 cup plain bread crumbs

Butter the pie plate with 1 tablespoon butter.

Beat the eggs in a large (2-3 qt) bowl Add corn, milk, onion, 1/4-1/2 teaspoon salt, and 1/2 cup of the shredded cheese.

Transfer to prepared pie plate (I make this in my 2 quart Pyrex batter bowl).

Melt remaining tablespoon of butter, mix with bread crumbs and remaining cheese. Sprinkle on top of mixture.

Bake, uncovered, for one hour, until set and hot.

I prefer to think of dementia as the soul half in this world and half in the spiritual world, preparing for transition.

My aunt freaked out when her mother(my grandmother) reported seeing her own dead relatives. Otherwise, her mind was perfect. I took it to mean she was "done" on this plane and she was ready to move on. Sure enough..........
