Cookins is not a chore, it is an art. -My ethnic's attit
~Anybody else have a weird Thanksgiving coming up?
In my family all is pretty much home-made (perhaps except bread and dessert).
Appetizers consist of Spanakopita, feta and kasseri cheeses, Calamata olives, fried small meatballs and the ouzo and retsina flow.
The main course is more dictated by tradition, except the potatoes are not mashed, but oven-roasted. [Wedges @ 325*F for 1.25 hours then higher heat for half an hour for color. Butter or meat fat/drippings and a quater cup of water at a time till they are roasted to perfection].
I was APPALLED to have insipid canned vegetables, boiled and slathered in butter served HOT, at a real [non-ethnic] Thankgiving. This is a HOLIDAY and that is the best one can do? OY VEY! My ethnic group uses butter ONLY on starches (in terms of veggies) and many are served at room temperature! I'm not saying one is better or worse. Just very different!
Proving once again you ARE you zip (postal) code and what you get used to!
There was a made-for-tv movie about Thanksgiving in Los Angeles where each of the four street corners had a family of different ethinc roots/extractions, and it was interesting to see the various "intepretations" on a holiday with a "fixed/dictated" menu. The main theme of the movie was basically we are all the same and aspire to/for the same things, depsite small meaningless differences.
