Hi y'all,

I have a Sunbeam blender that I love. An Oster Kitchen Center that I do not want to own, and an ice cream maker attachment for the Oster Kitchen Center that I love, love, love.

Anyone up for helping me figure out how to make an adapter to mate the blender and the ice cream maker? I would prefer to create something that does not alter either device; however, if one needs to be altered, I'd like for it to be the ice cream maker.

All ideas welcome.

Thanks,
Sarah

So...

It appears that one might be able to marry a replacement Kitchen Center driver with the bottom of an Oster/Sunbeam blender jar to make an adapter.

However, it appears that there is some kind of gearing differential on the Oster Kitchen Center between between its native blender driver shaft and the driver that drivers the ice cream maker, mixer head and slicer. Ideas?

What does the ice cream maker look like?  there might be something else out there that does what you want, is there something you really like about the Oster ice cream unit?

Ice Cream Maker

Here's the ice cream maker. I like it because it is compact, doesn't require tons of ice, makes ice cream in about 20 minutes. Although it is not currently compatible with my blender, I very much like the idea of having an ice cream maker that is an accessory to the appliance I already have.

Why not get rid of the blender and keep the Kitchen Center you ask? The blender is cool. The Kitchen Center is klunky--and I don't even want one in a more neutral color like beige.

The ice cream maker was manufactured as a stand alone product with its own motor, but I don't really want two motors. One of the things I like about the ice cream maker is that it is compact.

I've seen freezable ice cream maker bowls for KA mixers, and they seem like they might be even more convenient than this one, but they are expensive, and for whatever reason, I don't find it as appealing. Having never used one, I have no idea about differences in quality. It doesn't require salt or ice, so it would seem sensible to sell the Oster and buy the KA...

My question of the situation is, Was your blender made to run nonstop for 20 minutes (or however long it takes to make ice cream)? I know our blenders (one 80's Oster and a newer Oster) tend to get fairly warm after running for even a few minutes, I know I wouldn't want to listen to either for long, they are NOISY. I would just use a purpose made ice cream maker.

Good point...

Dustin,

I wouldn't have thought of that. I wonder if that's why the Kitchen Center gear that drives the ice cream maker seems to rotate more slowly than the blender spindle in the center of the device. I noticed that when I tested the Kitchen Center without any attachments.

Thanks,
Sarah

Sarah, I'm sure there is a reduction gear built into the Kitchen Center for the ice cream attachment, you wouldn't want it to go at blender speeds. That will complicate making an adapter for the sunbeam mixer.

And its pronounced Fronk-In-Steen

Conceding defeat...

Or at least conceding that the effort would be above and beyond what I'm willing to invest...

I'm looking at the Kitchen Aid stand mixer ice cream freezer attachment.

Thanks for all of the comments and ideas.

Do you make ice cream often? What is your favorite recipe? I've got a full fledged unit and rarely use it. Found out Kelly and i are about the only members to have a machine like this. It's a Simac and has refrigeration unit built in.

If I find a good easy recipe I might use it more...

Matt,

I have one of those Simac units too. I bought mine 4 or 5 years ago on ebay. When it arrived I discovered the aluminum lever that releases the bowl had been broken off. When I notified the seller (he purchased it an an estate sale and knew nothing about ice cream makers) he told me to keep it and refunded the purchase price and I just paid the $30 for shipping. I fashioned a new lever from a hand can opener I had (oddly enough from Italy like the Simac,) drilled and epoxyed it in place and it's worked fine ever since. It looks a little funky but it's actually easier to use than the original.

I've tried several recipes, some of them required cooking the mixture...too much work for lazy me. I've found the simple recipe that uses Eagle Brand Sweetened Condensed Milk to be very good and it's quick & easy. It adapts to all sorts of flavorings too.
