Cool Rich!!
I have been paddling for 7 years too! I started in 2001. I was originally only paddling for recreation and eventually my partner got my on his competitive team. This year I am on the top team on the Island and second top team in Canada - next to False Creek.
Right now I am outrigging on the OC-6 three times a week plus OC-1 twice a week in addition to two practices on a dragon boat. We are changing the training schedule next week.
Tomorrow I have a time trial…yikes I hate these!
The team I am training with (Gorging Dragons) won the worlds in South Africa in 2004 (they in came in 3rd).
We practice dragon boating on the gorge and out rig in the ocean all winter.
For the first time in 7 years I experienced 2 huli's in an outrigger during a race and practice(boat flipping over) The steers person had to rescue me during one of the races as I was starting to go in to shock from the cold water (February). Not very fun to experience this...wake up call!!
Several years ago, I raced in SF Dragon boat festival (September 2004). I knew the race organizers and they knew that I am a part time fitness instructor so they asked me to do the festival warm-up. That was lots of fun to get every one warmed up....they want me to come again to it.
Do you race at the Vancouver Alcan Festival?
Paddles UP!
The picture below is a few years old..now I am much bigger..better technique..stronger…harder…leaner..lol
Cheers!
Bob
