Athletes and water

A client's "trainer" has told him to drink the volumes of water described at the outset of this thread and he was also told the bunk about caffinated beverages. What happens in our culture is that the result of such advice is dehydration sometimes because our young athletes are simply not going to take in that much fluid quantity in that form.

Mark, your source recommends 3.7 liters of water and other beverages per day for males aged 19-70. Most guys I know don't drink 1/2 that much.

People wonder why Americans have among the highest disease rates in the world, for everything from diabetes to kidney disease to prostate and breast cancer, etc, and the answer can be boiled down to just three factors: processed foods, environmental pollution and lack of clean drinking water. The chlorinated or chloramined crud that comes out of most Americans' taps is not clean water, it's simply disinfected.

Jeff, a clarification.

I was discussing the science of hydration. "Most guys" are adequately hydrated. And don't have to worry about caffinated beverages having a diuretic effect.

You last post brings up the issue of water quality and contaminants. Now that might also be a fun thread. I, personally, feel pretty lucky to have "from the tap" water available that is so much better than most inhabitants of the planet and I think it ungracious to reject it and buy whatever might be in plastic bottles. Buy a canteen.

I was in a local diner the other day and watched a man eat his lunch, then pick up a full glass of water, put it to his lips, and drink it down in a continuous series of gulps. That must be what it was like at a diner in the 30's. You just don't see that anymore. Not because of water quality - just our culture.

Clarification #2

Your referenced 3.7 liters assumes that .7 liters will be from sources other than beverages (salads, fruit, etc). There ya go, guys only "drink" 3.0 liters. They eat the rest.
