Last several years, complaints have been registered [largely online] about Planter's dry roast peanuts.

Longtime buyers saying flavor is wrong, rancid, lower-grade [smaller] nuts.

Coincides with Planters being bought out by Kraft, the WCI of packaged foods.  Their 'French onion dip' doesn't even taste like food, nor does it contain much compared to other brands including store brands which start with sour cream

not water whipped into soybean oil.

If you've been victimized by the inedibility of recent Planter's-labeled dry roast peanuts, all may not be lost.  Planter's brand has in turn been bought out by Hormel.  It will take them months to correct the Kraft shortcomings and sell off existing inventory.

You might try them again after the first of the year, see if they are more like you remember.

Myself, I'm not in the market.  Peanuts are becoming too hard for my aging fillings.  Just broke another one eating a Baby Ruth.

Love Planters Peanuts

(Doing my Sophia Petrillo from The Golden Girls impersonation)
Picture it, the year is 1966, Atlantic City, NJ, on the boardwalk near Steel Pier, a young boy has his dream come true by seeing Mr. Peanut in person! He's a giant with stilts, wearing a peanut costume and of course he's also wearing a top hat. We are talking exciting stuff! The air is filled with the totally wonderful aroma of roasting peanuts. Something I'll always remember.

At Christmas I get a Mr. Peanut peanut butter maker. It didn't work that great. After a few weeks something plastic broke in the crank mechanism. And then my brother put the thing under a lamp where the head melted. After that I have no memory of what happened to the thing.

Note that the current jar of peanuts is labeled K for Kosher. One usually associates Hormel products with pork, a very un-kosher food. Should be interesting when the change happens if the new jars are still Kosher.

Rick - peanuts have been a regular part of my diet my entire life. My favorite are the roasted in the shell variety, but they always make such a mess I now only eat them outside in the warmer months. My favorite kind of shelled peanuts are the Spanish variety, which are smaller and still have their thin skins.

But my go-to daily peanut snack is dry roasted. Today's Planter's peanuts ARE NOTHING close to what they used to be in terms of taste, size or texture. I stopped buying Planter's products quite a while ago because the decline in quality was quite obvious to me. I hope Hormel decides to take Planter's back to their old standards of quality. I'll keep an eye on the packages and see when the Hormel name starts showing up on the back.

Thanks!

I love peanuts too. I however prefer the Honey Roasted to the Dry Roasted, they aren’t as salty. When I was a kid I loved those little cellophane bags of Planters and Circus peanuts.

I also had a baby sitter when I was very small and Mom worked, we were dropped off there early every morning and Mom picked us up on her way home from work. Her name was Mrs. Hoskins, but we called her Nanny. She kept a 50 lb. bag of raw peanuts next to her stove in the kitchen. For my brother and my afternoon snack she would dip into the 50 Lb. bag of raw peanuts with a pie pan and place the pan full of peanuts into the oven and roast the peanuts then give them to Joe and I. They were out of this world.

BTW, Nanny also dipped snuff and she had those old squat 1 Lb. coffee cans with tissue in them strategically placed around the house for her spittoons. We both loved her very much.

I like peanuts, and other nuts a lot, but rarely eat them anymore as they cause me to have abdominal pain. Cashews are my favorite.

Hormel owns many brands that don't have anything to do with pork. In addition to Planters. they also make Skippy peanut butter, Hormel Chili, Chi-chi's salsa, Don Miguel Mexican foods, Herb-Ox Bouillon, and many other items.

In their meat line, I especially like their Austin Blues Pulled Pork. It's a foodservice only product, and GFS has it at times. My sister has served it when she has had a big gathering.

But watch out!

My dad used to have issues with his digestive system and he always liked Planters dry roast nuts. One day my mom said "I notice there's nuts in the house, he can't have that with his diverticulitis." "Sam. you're going to end up in the hospital again". Sure enough, the next week, he was in the hospital. This is when he started taking Metamucil, every day for the rest of his life.

Just made a 2 pound container of peanut butter-using two 1 pound cans of Planters Peanuts in the Twister jar on the Blendtech.Use the peanut butter in my sandwiches at work.Have had no taste problems with the nuts or the butter I made.Making the peanut butter-NOISY--But good!

The other side of the 'Pond'

Planter's were my FAVE dry roasted peanuts! Sadly, they are pretty much unobtainable here now..... Everything is KP or 'store's own' it seems. Though from the sound of the OP I'm not missing much at the moment. Love cashews and macadamias, too, but macadamias are quite rare over here... Aldi seem to be one of the few stores which stock them regularly.

Long time, no posts!!

All best

Peanuts have plenty of fiber, so they should be OK. However one thing to be a bit wary of with peanuts is aflatoxin, which from my college nutrition classes I learned peanuts and peanut butters tend to have. I would go as far as to say that back in the 70's we learned that ALL peanut butters had aflatoxin contamination. Aflatoxin apparently comes from a mold that grows on harvested peanuts. I don't know about peanut products today, hopefully they've improved harvesting and storage conditions to minimize mold growth. And, as I recall, aflatoxin can cause cancer. But according to the link below, nowadays aflatoxins in domestic mass produced peanut butters are minimal, due to stringent regulations and inspections.

"Aflatoxin exposure from peanuts can be controlled and reduced by visually checking nuts for moldy-looking, discolored, or shriveled specimens, which should be discarded (this isn’t like potatoes chips where the dark ones taste better; any discoloration could be a sign of harmful mold). In general, only buying nuts and nut butters that were produced (and thus regulated) in the United States is your best bet to avoid any unwanted exposure. According to the University of California Berkeley Wellness Center, peanuts sold inside the U.S. are not considered a problem, but you should still take care to store them in a cool, dry place (all the more reason to eat peanut butter right out of the fridge)."

Of the others, I love Brazil nuts but often those also can be a bit dodgy. I just discard the ones that are discolored or moldy. Macadamias are also delicious, if a bit pricey. In general, tree nuts are a healthy way to consume protein, fiber, and good oils.

something for everybody

Got these at Costco last month. Brazil and Macadamia top my list. Yum! My only complaint is the salt content. Too salty for my taste. It's almost like I want to rinse off the salt before eating.
