Due to ALL the pressure here on AW, I just got home with this.....

Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

An Observation:

It would appear this machine was last used on the "China/Crystal" cycle with "Heated Drying." That is, unless someone was mucking with the buttons ;-D

last used on the "China/Crystal" cycle

No, I was pressing some of the buttons to see how they felt.

Washer111, you requested a video of this dishwasher and I want to ask, why for the sound?   Forgive me for being direct, but videos of dishwashers (and dryers for that matter) seem rather pointless to me..... UNLESS you go to the trouble of making a custom fit plexiglass window so you can watch what's happening inside.   I won't be doing that, so sorry to say no video if this DW in the future.

YEAH!!

Congratulations! A major save! Your tub and racks are in excellent condition for a machine of this age.

One thing to note about this model is the cycle selector switch. It is highly sensitive (although it does not look it). You need to FIRMLY depress the button before you start the machine and need to be wary of "bumping" any of the buttons while it's running. This happened to me when I first used mine; it ran for hours! At first i assumed it was a thermostat , but that checked out. When I referenced my GE service manual I found it specifically addresses this condition. When I followed the instructions the machine ran perfect! Also the Cancel/Drain selection can take up to 4 minutes to complete (and the drying fan will come on as it resets through the "Dry" phase.)

Sorry to go on so much. Very excited for you! Have fun!

need to be wary of "bumping" any of the buttons...

If you go back up to reply #4 with my photo of the control panel, you can see a rigid brown "ledge" below the cycle buttons.   When I saw that last night I thought "Hmm, that's odd", but now it makes perfect sense.   That ledge below the buttons is there to help prevent the buttons getting pressed if you bump it.

I wonder if this"stacks the cycles", like programming a juke box.    If you press more then one button, will it "play" each cycle you press, one after the other?

No, no, I am all good with that. It would mainly be for the sound of the machine (or wash action, if you did the Plexiglass thing or stuck a camera inside the DW).

Thanks for being direct - its always nice when people are honest :-)

Here it is washing.

That funny whining noise was the lower wash arm that was kind of off balance at the time but other than that a fairly quiet machine. I had replaced the pump assembly with a new one and the newer one was much quieter.

Oy-Vey!

That old motor looks like an absolute monster! You can certainly see the difference. The new pump actually looks a little smaller

Dishwasher sounds very nice though :-) Thanks for posting!

GEs frist Plastic Tub DW

Glad you got this DW Kevin, you should have fun with it, hopefully running it will not cause a water shortage in southern California, LOL.

Ralph, changing to the newer pump and motor really upgrades the efficiency, cleaning and rinsing performance of GE DWs that had the old shaded pole motors and big housing pumps, it is differently a good thing to do if one intends to use the DW much. I have not decided whether to keep the original style P&M in the DW that we have when it gets installed in the Museums Great Wall of DWs. These newer PSC motors use just 1/3 to 1/4 the power of the original black shaded pole motors, GE designed and introduced this motor for DW use in the late 1960s when they still though that electricity was going to be so cheap that they would not even brother with electric meters because of Nuclear power.

The Great Wall of DWs will have 18 or 21 built-in DWs installed three high and will all be capable of being run for testing and demonstration purposes, so I will try and leave them in the original build state.

NICE SAVE!!!!

Im So happy to see this one was saved, and in epic condition too :D Thats a great machine to have. If Im not mistaken the China crystal adds air to the pump either by hose or reduced fill, someone one here will know more than me on this though. The peer pressure was intense but soon or latter you will see that it was for your own good LOL.

When you get a chance post some pics of the underside/motor on this great gem. And by chance would this happen to have the cycle schematic as well?

Happy Washing!

Cycle Progression:

I'm pretty sure the following is roughly correct:

Hi-Temp Cycles (Normal/Potscrubber) + Normal: Pre-Wash -> Pre-Rinse -> Pre-Rinse -> (Long, Hot) Main-Wash -> Rinse -> Rinse -> (Possibly long/heated) Final Rinse -> Dry

I think one of the Pre-Rinses and Post-Wash rinses are a reduced fill for China/Crystal or Light fill levels, to save water

Light Soil: Pre-Rinse -> Pre-Rinse -> (Timed Heat) Main-Wash -> Rinse -> Rinse -> (Maybe Rinse) -> Dry

China Crystal: Same as above - Aerated water to reduce "damage" to dishes

Rinse/Hold: Rinse -> Rinse (This occurs on the GSD1200)

Water usage? If 18 Gallons is the total for a "Normal cycle," then the fills are roughly 2.57 Gallons (Give or take 1/4 of a Gallon)

Who could argue

..it's beautiful and free...is the interior racks a green color? I like whatever it is.
....wow that replacement motor looks brand new....whatever it came off of.

Actually that pump and motor assembly was brand new. I think GE still sells these, as heaps of their dishwashers from the 70s, 80s, 90s and 2000s (and perhaps even now) used them to clean the dishes.

That's the spirit!

If that K/A was something (both sight and sound), then that GE aught to make for some cool video. Next up, Kevin's GoPro in a washer (not that anyone's ever put a camera in a washer, either... LOL!) I triple dog dare you to video the insides of a front loader...

RCD

Oh wait, I have a GOPRO with a water tight enclosure........

Just have to get some light in there!!

And if possible don't use the audio the GoPro captures. They are way too sensitive to mechanical vibration and contact noises. I'd imagine the spray inside the DW impinging on the camera would be quite distracting. I have experimented with my GoPro submerged in the tub of my BD Whirlpool, I use a external audio audio recorder to capture the sound that is merged with the video in the computer.
