Early-'70s GE Fridge

While it's not an Amana, it's a very nice early-'70s fridge, and if it were local to me, I'd be on it.

It's in Mound, MN, not too far from Minneapolis. It's a TBF-16D; price is $75. I think it's icemaker-capable. I really like the classic simplicity of the styling.

similar to mine

that looks the same as my 1980 TBF 17-same handles and emblem.Only thing I don't like about mine is it has expanded foam insulation and the outer walls and top are slightly bulged out-walls are quite thick and it seems well insulated.Got mine for $25,both fan motors were badly worn but still working.

....Your cost to operate?

And does yours have the icemaker port in it?

doesn't seem to bad on operating cost-haven't paid much attention though,been operating other power drawing appliances lately.I did add a switch to disable the auto defrost(added plexi view port to freezer back wall to inspect evap coil for frost-activate the auto defrost when there is buildup)swapped the worn evap fan motor for a EBM papst brushless DC fan motor-runs cooler than a shaded pole fan motor:less heat introduced to fridge interior.The original worn condenser fan motor was rated for .39amp,found one in my spares box rated .13a-turned the fan at about same speed as original.Bottom panel on my fridge was missing(if there ever was one?)so a new one was made to ensure good airflow through condenser.Sometimes the back panel is also missing on forced air GEs-they will not cool with this missing...The modifications I did to mine no doubt reduced the electricity usage some.Mine was setup for icemaker option.

Looky what else I found. Lincoln, NE CL -

It's White with the black handles - most of the survivors are the white-handled version, and their handles long ago turned to Harvest Gold. Icemaker/dispenser not working, which could be cheap and easy to fix, or could occupy your spare time and your wallet for months to come....

That GE

is the same as we got in 1977 in Harvest Gold. Its been running since then w/o ever requiring any repair. Still our main fridge in the kitchen. I make sure the condenser coils are kept clean. Ours isnt set up for ice maker.

Nice, late JK 25. Looks like 1977 or so, though I don't have catalogs from that era to confirm, only memories. The clues are the woodgrain inserts on the door handles, the redesigned knobs with stamped skirts and the black accents (just above each door) replacing former bright-metal ones.

Take care of it - you'll not find anything new to match its performance or longevity, to say nothing of its classic good looks.

From a Shopper's Square post, here's a JK 25 from the middle of the run, with the woodgrain handles, but with the bright-metal trim above each door; the knobs are the earlier ones with die-cast skirts instead of stamped. Early JK 25s also had a brushed metal insert in each oven door handle, plus the other differences mentioned.
