I went with my lovely parents to Breckenridge, CO for Easter this past weekend. The condo we stayed in was older but nicely furnished, and was equipped with this awesome Maytag washer/dryer with electronic touch controls.

It was a really capable machine, I was impressed. I've put more pictures on imgur, follow the link. The picture where I'm washing... um... shoes... (they smelled like the river, okay) is on the medium water level, I think most machines today would count that as large. It even had a tub light! The dryer was extremely quiet as well. If I had to have a stacked machine, this would definitely be it.

These earlier digital stacked Maytag units are fantastic. I recently parted out one from 1985 - fairly early unit. I was surprised to see the tub lamp on the earlier model, devised much like the A806 tub lamps from the previous decade. Very interesting to see that they changed the tub lamp on this model as well. These were standard capacity models, much smaller than today's washers.

Most parts on these are proprietary for the stacked units, with the drive parts being the only universal items between stand alone washer and dryers. The early ones were over built beasts.

The tub light was manual, you push on it like the light in the headliner of your car to turn it on and off. The state of the machine or position of the lid seemed to have nothing to do with it.

I have always liked these machines. I almost bought one once off CL but then a moment of sanity said "you have enough" and I passed.

Now I never see them anymore. Should have got it when I could have.

Thanks for taking and sharing the pictures. Very nice!

While these MT's have become rare you can still get the WP equivalent on a regular basis. This is even better IMO. It had also had a nearly full size tub, the same sturdy DD mechanism as a fullsize WP, a white LK style tub with dual action agitator and some even had windows in the dryer door. It's mechanical controls while lacking prestige gave less to go wrong. A word of caution: If you are looking at a Kenmore branded stack make sure the model# begins with 110. or it is a disguised WCI/Elux Frigidaire which I would avoid.

On a Yacht

I worked on a 100' Broward back in 1988.
In the Crew's Quarters, we had a stack MT. It ran 15 hours a day 7 days a week. I was on the Boat for 7 months and it never broke down. Great Unit. Indestructable.

I got one off CL for 50.00....nothing wrong with it.....its all electric, my tub light is inside and operated when you slide>>>>>the lid open.....love that feature....

really a decent machine, got for my mother, the dryer being high is great to avoid bending.....its is a one speed machine, but handles loads nicely......I have done the 50hz pulley upgrade......one other thing is the simple controls, and variations......a 19 minute wash if needed----and I think a 6 to 8 minute rinse time extensions....extended spin as well.....

odd that the washer has a light, but the dryer does not......

MT 27" Stack Washer-Dryer

These were built from about 1985- the end of production of the helical drive washer production around 2006 after WP took ownership of MT. They were all electronically controlled till the early 1990s when MT started offering a less expensive model with mechanical controls and after about two years of having a choice of controls they dropped the electronic option all together as it was just to expensive to build and always had reliability issues. The machine you pictured was the last model of the electronically controlled machines, it would be an early 1990s machine.

WE still have HUNDREDS of customers with these machines in the DC area and repairing them is very good money maker as they had far more problems than a regular MT washer and dryer pair, plus because of the cost of replacement and difficulty of replacement most people will fix them over and over again. 90% of all the functional parts of this washer and dryer are exactly the same as standard MT W&D parts. Really the only functional part that is different is the dryer motor.

The best thing about these MT stacks was the fact that you could move the washer and dryer unit separately for tight installations and hook-up the dryer first. The worst thing about them is the washer and dryer has EIGHT leveling feet and EIGHT lock nuts on those feet so it was almost impossible to ever get one level and all feet properly adjusted when dealing with tight spaces and old uneven floors. As a result vibration complaints are still a frequent complaint and service call.

Overall a good machine but the best ever full sized stack is the 27" WP TL stacks these had much larger capacity, no vibration and leveling issues and were much easier to service from the front and more reliable to boot.
