Tombstone Bendix

Jon------I'm 160 miles away, I don't think anyone would make the trip with me to get it, and it very likely wouldn't fit in my little hatchback to take to a shipper. I'm also afraid it weighs a ton, I don't know for sure. Having said all that, I'm open to ideas?????

hauling in a hatchback

I have hauled many machines in my 1993 Mazda 323 hatchback. I am quite sure that the antique Bendix will easily fit into your car and it truly is not that heavy. I say go for it !

Ohio Bendix

I'm from Mansfield. If you would be coming through this way I could ride along to help. If you are not going to get it I might try for it. Jeb

Bendix.

It's a lot smaller than it looks and lightweight too. It has no suspension and is only about 30 inches tall (6 inches shorter than the top of a conventional top loader (not including the control panel on a new one).

i called about this one

yesterday morning and was told no one else had called about the ad. so i assumed no one had any claims on it and drove up to lima and picked it up.

i have a bendix already that i got from melvin (supreme whirlpool) this year. but this one looked different. it was called a "tombstone" by other members here.

temp dial gives

warm or hot. cold water washing wasn't "in" yet when this machine was built.

i'm assuming it is one of the first, like my other one, from around 1947? correct me if i'm wrong here.

have not taken the back

off this one yet but it looks good.

checked out the pump and motor from underneath and they look really good too. hoses are not brittle and no evidence of water or oil leakage.

note the metal inlet valve, brass probably. i assume it is a mixing valve like my other one that provides warm water at a set temp.

for 60 bucks and a 3 hour drive

each way it was not bad!

gonna keep it thru the winter and then decide what to do with it.

i'm not one to "part" machines out unless they are beyond hope like my one rollermatic was. i prefer to keep them intact, like a peice of history or art, which to me they are!

i may re-sell it though in the future, have no idea yet. for the winter it will be put in a nice secure place out of the elements. i may even work on some of the rust if i get time. not gonna turn it on though until i have time to tear into it, which may not be until next summer! but for now it's safe and rescued!

three hour drive

That's a cool machine. I am glad you made the three hour drive to buy it. I would have done the same thing. That's a model I have never seen in person. Good on ya man.

Bendix Logo

Am I the only one who thinks that the Bendix logo is out of place looking on these machines? It's a very modern logo with the type-font, it could just as easily be stuck to a 90's appliance.

i'm curious about 2 things

which machine i have is the older model, the tombstone model or the other with the bendix logo at the bottom left front.

and what type of replacement or additional transmission fluid do i use in it's transmission. larry in parma at modern parts house suggested type f transmission fluid.

as far as the logo goes i never really paid much attention to it. i doesn't look 60's to me, that's for sure! i would guess both thesemachines are from the late 40's.
