. . . to Dishwashercrazy. They're fun machines and do a pretty good job if the water is hot enough.

It's not automatic. You tell it what to do.

A non-automatic dishwasher. I've never seen one of these before.

I assume it uses an impeller under the screen? It would be nice to be able to let it wash extra long for baked on crud. You could pause it and when things look clean drain and start the rinses. Fun!

GE's 1st Portable.

Fascinating machine. Lots of steps to use it, but it's better than washing by hand. I believe Dishwashercrazy has a write-up or a video on how to run this (I could be mistaken, however).

I have a video that I took the first time that I ran my RA-949, but it is unedited and has only my spoken commentary - there are no screen notes edited into the video. Plus, it is only an exterior view - no water action was included. I will upload it, and attach.

Here is my Unedited Video that I made in 2010. This video lasts 25 minutes. The first half shows the very first water test that I ran on this dishwasher after I brought it home. For the second half of the video, I continued recording, added dishes and ran the machine through a complete cycle according to the instruction sheet.

In the second half of the video, you most likely will want to fast forward through portions of the video, such as during the 5 minute wash portion, as I did not speak yet I continued to record.

Here it is Mike's machine washing with the specialy made clear top.
It does change water patterns according how you load the machine.
So it is a little spotted here.
With plates only it seem to spray all around.
Or just glasses strong spray pattern.
Fun Dishwasher.

I know this is an old post, but there's not much on these RA949s! I just purchased one last night (I think it was a steal) complete, and with original display stickers still on it!

Does anyone use this model regularly? If so, what kind of detergents are recommended?

I'm new to the vintage, automatic washer world...been retro-vating my 1951 bungalow in Nebraska for a few years.

Any suggestions would be appreciated!

OH! I love these machines!! I don't use mine regularly but it does a decent job in my opinion.

The trick with these machines is that it is not automatic... The operator of the machine controls when the machine fills, how long it washes, and when the machine drains. I'm not sure if the operating instructions came up in the Automatic Ephemera library already...

The 'basic' operation suggested was a 5-minute wash followed by 2 rinses (I think it was suggest to rinse for 2 minutes). When I used the machine, I gave dis hes a 5-minute prewash, two 4-minute rinses, a 9-minute main wash, then three 4-minute rinses. Don't forget that you'll have to add detergent manually when you want a 'wash' period in the cycle.

Oh, and there is no heated dry with this model; you just open the lid and let the dishes air-dry.

The detergent goes in the little black plastic (pouch, drawer, pod?) on the inside of the lid, correct? I found someone had generously scanned their operating instructions card but I wasn't 100% sure on where the detergent went! And may I ask another question, what does it mean by 'insert ground wire'? I'm sure mine has it, but where does it get inserted at?

I love my 1951 GE stove and use it (nearly) everyday, hopefully this little guy proves himself as awesome!
