The control box, condenser, and the evaporator with a big hole in it for freezing (good luck with those plastic trays) indicate this is an early model.

We all know the last thing the system needs is a shot of freon.  It just needs The Fridge Whisperer (David) to run some tests.

LOL

I appreciate the vote of confidence in my abilities, but must say that these old DR Monitor Tops are a crapshoot at best.  They are all going on 90 years old and have been surely given plenty of unqualified service attempts over the years. But it never hurts to try! And for that price, it would be a good buy for the parts and cabinet even if it was not fixable.

Normally, when a seller says "needs freon" that translates to "It burned out so badly that the paint was smoking on the outside of the compressor; we had to call the fire department, and they told us we'd go to jail if we plugged it in again!"

Or, they KNOW SOMEONE who had a brother with an uncle who once found an empty rusted Freon can by the side of County Road 10 and now considers himself a master technician because of his find; and this expert has told them it "needs freon" so that has to be correct... because expert, right?

I wrote to the seller and advised about the type of refrigerant these machines use.  Since it doesn't appear to have any yellow staining and I presume there's no foul odor, I'd wager the SO2 is still in there.
