Easy spindrier

I picked up this easy spindrier last year from a friend who picked it up at an estate sale. When I got it from him the spindrier would not engage into spin. I suspect that the transmission has an issue and would like to see if I can get it working again as the Easy seems like a really unique and fun machine. Has anyone here worked on one of these before and what Is your advice before cracking into it?

HI, Good luck with your Easy. I would lubricate the controls under the machine first; make sure that all of that easy to move. Try that and see what happens. Gary

Hi Gary!
All levers move very easily and seem to be well lubed up. What’s odd is that when I go to engage the spinner by pushing the lever to the right The shaft turns smoothly by hand and I can somewhat feel the gear wanting to engage. I take it these have a brake of some sort because when I move the lever to the left it’s hard to turn.

Is that a storage compartment at the bottom in the middle?

I believe it is a drain lever.

HI Mike, There is no brake with the spinner. Pull the spinner basket up and out of the machine. You may find a rubber boot that fits over the bottom of the center and shaft covers that part and down to the bottom. You can lub that up a bit by pulling the boot up, but be careful because it is old and libel to tear. Just a few drops there will do. Good luck with this. These machines wash up a storm. Gary

I will give that a shot. There are quite a few videos of these in action on youtube and they seem to be pretty impressive in terms of rollover action.

Mike, If you get this to all work, you will amazed at how they wash. The spiralator really turns the clothes over.

The washer itself works, its the spinner that doesn't. not to mention I put some water in the machine because I read somewhere that someone mentioned something about bad seals and sure enough it leaks like a sieve. so at this point it needs to come apart anyway. now here is the real question... how do I remove the tubs to access the top portion of the transmission, hoses, etc? I can remove the agitator, and spin basket just fine, im not sure if there is a special type of spanner wrench I need.
I would like to get this thing running properly so I can have the opportunity to do my laundry in something other than an automatic. At one point in time i had a hoover twin tub and loved it, used it every weekend and did many loads before getting a new front loader (which i regretted).

Mike, If the seal under the washer tub is good, I wouldn't mess with it. The weakest part of this machine is the pump. Look to see where the water is leaking from to determine where the seals etc. may need to be replace.

Transmission Fluid

These machines cannot be tipped over because the transmission is not sealed. There is a vent hole under the tubs. Another vulnerable point of these machines is to never used a higher fill level that what is marked on the spiralator (agitator). Water could enter the transmission.

Note the pump is running as long as the motor is on, levers and faucet placement determine where the water flows. Maintaining the cables and belt are also important.

I’m very well aware about the whole transmission thing. I have opened up a couple of transmissions before, one being a maytag orbital and the other a whirlpool direct drive. As far as the full level goes I greatly thank you for that tidbit as I have not used or even attempted to fill the machine yet. The only thing I did was pour a gallon of water into the tub to check for leaks because I had read somewhere that someone had issues with leaking on their unit. When transporting the unit I took the legs off and set it inside of my SUV in the upright position. I do however have a strong feeling that doing any work on this machine will be a pain in the ass. But hey, who isn’t up for a challenge?

Efficient Machine Washing

I like the efficiency of this machine utilizing the "spin-rinse" One could get three to four loads of laundry completed in under an hour. I also found the clean-up and use easier than wringer or semi-automatic machines. The spinner is very fast and much drier than what a wringer could accomplish. My grandmother's unit lacked the inner tower in the spin tub I have seen in many machines that have been videoed in operation. The wash tub could handle easily 3 sets of sheets and pillow cases. The Spiralator of her washer was made of cast aluminum having a white finish. We had shimmed the drive block to keep agitator from rubbing on the bottom of the was tub.

Hi Gary!

The last couple of weeks have been crazy as I came down with a cold that has been going around, and I’ll say it was something fierce! Someone here was so kind to send me a service manual for a newer spindrier and by the looks of it I can access most of everything from the top. Now by the looks of it I’m going to need a spanner wrench which I’ll have to shop around for one. It seems pretty self explanatory getting into the machine, which by looking at the manual all I have to do is take the tubs off and that should expose all of the workings. Also I believe that the hoses are shot due to how quickly a gallon of water managed to pour out from under the machine so those will need to be replaced. A process indeed and it is going to take a lot of time.

Good luck with all of this. Your machine looks older than mine does. I have one that has the controls all in the middle,; the cables that run all of the functions must be lubricated so that they work well.
