Ecologic problems (again!)

Hi all,

As you may or may not be aware, I had to have a new drain pump fitted on my machine. I thought, oh well, that should keep it going for a while. No, now, two weeks later, theres and wierd noise coming from the motor.

It's a sort of metallic crackling/scratching sound, which is very audible on spin but can also sometimes be heard on wash and distribute. I was worried it might be sparking, but I took the back off and ran it on a spin and this dosent appear to be the case. This also confirmed to me that it is coming from the motor.

When the motor is turned by hand there is no noise, it only starts when the motor is running. When the machine is finished the spin, despite the drum still spinning, the noise stops.

It didnt make this noise before last night, so it has come on quite suddenly.

Could it me motor bearings? Thats what me (and Seamus) think it is.

Thats ame thing happened to my grans hoover logic 1200, she got scared it'd set up on fire! The first time she smelt and heard it she said i'm not letting the final spin reach 1200, she let it spin for about 10 seconds and turned it off, she was scared!

Then i told her ok, you don't want to use it anymore, then i'll do your washing in my hotpoint aquarius wma58. Then I chose the LG for her, well due to her habit since being young she washes and scrubs mainly all clothes by hand then washes them, in the logic she did that and used program J all the time minimum iron 50oc and when it got on crease guard she'd put it on F which was special treatments (final rinse) with 1200 spin!

from hers smoke started to come and i thought it must have been from the motor as it was quite old and never had a problem till then, so it had no repairs in it's lifetime!

How old was your grans machine when this happened?

There's no way I'm giving up on this machine, it can break down all it wants, it WILL be repaired lol.

She told me she bought it when it came out new! I wasn't around then so don't know! LoL

No repairs in it's lifetime and was thrown away in 2006.

So how long would that be?
And by the way my grandads brothers got a very old a3190 and it still works but often becomes unbalanced, they may scrap it when they renovate their antique kitchen and plus they just live 2 doors away! I'm always there, it's a cool machine though! LoL

The logic was introduced in 1988 I believe

So it would have been 18 years old. I think it's quite common for these machines to last a long time with no repairs. The drain pump was the first thing that went wrong on mine so that was 17 years without repair.

DO NOT LET THEM SCRAP THAT MACHINE! Nothing annoys me more than if people scrap a wonderful washer just because they get a new kitchen or it looks "old fashioned". Washers should be kept until beyond repair NO EXCUSES!

Lol sorry it's just something that really gets me going. If people were't so wasteful of appliances there would still be a lot more fantastic washers around than most of the cheap plastic crap that wastes space in peoples houses these days.

ok now I'm getting worried

Did a load in it just now, the noise was gradually getting worse throughout the cycle and 500rpm spin sounded really bad (dont dare try 1000). Also, it may have been my imagination, but there seemed to be a metallic smell in the room whilst it was on.

Someone please tell me what parts I need to sort this out, otherwise I'm gonna be left without a machine!

I'll tell my grandad's bro not to throw that washer away, although it's had 4 or 5 repairs in its lifetime the a3190 is a great machine!

His wife she stops the machine when clothes have got in a ball and opens it up and loosens everything up and puts it back exactly where it was in the cycle. She only uses the woolens program, which spins at 800pm but she says 1100rpm makes it shake too much and it's too loud, but the woolens wash is also great as thats the only cycle i can see! LoL

I really hope you get help for your ecologic, If i could i'd love to!

Taking a stab at the fault from the symptons you describe i would say its the motor brushes.
You can get these very cheaply on ebay.....all the logic range of machines used the same motor

The only other possibility could be the drive belt if it is badly worn and frade......but my guess would be the brushes, they easy to change providing you can get the machine on it side to gain access to the motor

By the way there is a misunderstanding lol, my name is not matt i thought it was yours, my name is eby. Well thats wat im known as!

Yeah it was the motor that was nearly gone aswell as the brushes, we tried but it was jammed in, a few people tried but it was stuck so we had to get rid of it. It would have lasted a little longer as the motor had about a couple more months. If someone gave me a very good condition hoover logic or ecologic with minimum 1200 spin then i'd buy it or a hotpoint 9534 100 spin. They're the best! LoL

i was going to get the above machine which is an ecologic with 1300spin, slightly different to yours as this is the thumb slider version, all cousins and relatives had the 1200 or 1300 versions. Everyone had them till a couple of years ago then everyone threw them away. The pic below, just thought i'd post it anyway: I got it from here.

That definately pretty much confirms my suspisions that it was either motor brushes or bearings. It's really quite a horrible noise! Sounds like something scraping in the motor.

One question though, in the meantime is it safe to carry on using the machine? Continued use won't cause damage to other parts of the machine will it?

As long as I can put up with the noise I'd like to be able to still use it, there's quite a pile of washing built up!

Dyson2drums funny you should mention that, my Gran always used Woollens on ours. The instructions claim it does an 800rpm spin on wool but it actually does the 1000rpm cottons spin. I always hated it when she did the washing cos stuff was never clean.

yes you can still use the machine, but if it gets real bad and starts sparking stop using it as it ccould blow the main PCB.

This washer dosen't have a PCB to my knowledge. It's mostly (totally?) mechanically controlled.

Yeah the woolens program isn't very active, i find the rinses very inactive short tumbles long rests, but when it distributes i think they get rinsed properly as the water is still in drum!

Why can't newer machine do ditribution drain? (I'd like that, but with strong suspension not plastic)

Yeah matt i think it should fine as long as too much pressure is not given to it.

Woolens rinse

Woolens rinse on my machine is the same as cottons. 4 rinses 1/3 up the door with water and synthetics tumbling. Theres a 600rpm spin between the 2nd and 3rd rinses and it just distributes between the others.

The rinses basically fill, tumble once in each direction and it drains. Thats all thats need though, especially with the high water level.

I never understand why so many washers take so long and tumble so fast on rinse. It's only a case of diluting the detergent in the clothes. Excessive tumbling dosen't imporve the rinse.

hmmmm I think it needs fixing now

Currently doing a half load of towels and have noticed big blue sparks coming from under the machine. I'll let it finish this load then I'll leave the rest till monday and get the repairman out.

Btw is £40 for a call out charge resonable? It seems slightly steep to me.
