Hi there,

My sister's 21 year old (she says she bought it in Dec 1998, but can't find the receipt) washing machine has finally shown its FIRST fault.

It's a ELECTROLUX Premier 1000E. And it still looks as good as new.

However, it just developed the following fault, that I'll decribe as numbered items.

NOTE: The drum bearings are quite, the drum can be turned easily by hand, and I've had the top off, and the belt is in place and not damaged at all. Under the cover it is as clean as a whistle and looks like new, just as it does from the front exterior.

1). The manual programme selector switch doesn't turn itself any more. That is, you can select any programe, wash, rinse, or spin, but the selector switch doesn't move on from where you set it.

2). The water fills perfectly ok, and if you select rinse, the pump empties the machine perfectly ok.

3). No matter which position on the selector switch is chosen, the drum oscillates back and forth, but does nothing else. You can hear power being applied to the motor, as the drum begins to rotate, but then it sounds like the power is cut, and the drum just spins freely. Each time it reverses direction of rotation, you hear a surge of power as the drum begins to turn and accelarate, but then the power seems to be cut and the drum just rotates freely, until it reverses direction, and the cycle repeats. It does this indefinitely unless the machine is switched off or the the selector switch is moved to another postion.

4). It seems to be most noticeable on any of the Spin cycles. When a spin cyle is selected, the pump drains the water, and then as the drum begins to turn, the power is cut as described in point 3) above. So the Drum never reaches speed, and it continues to reverse itself too, which it obviously shouldn't do on a spin cycle.

I'm baffled. Is it the motor, the selector switch, a circuit board, or a sensor?

I feel it is a realtively simple fault to fix -- if you know how ---. But unfortunately I don't and she can't afford to pay for an engineer only to be told buy a new machine.

So I figured that one of the dedicated experts here is the best place to ask for advice.

Here are some pictures of the facia. I also have a video of it in operation, showing the oscillating drum, but I don't remember how to upload a video.

Hope someone can help.

Thanks very much in advance.

PS. If I can't fix it simply, is it of any interest to someone here? It has been such a good reliable machine, and looks in such fantastic condition, that it seems a shame to see it dumped and destroyed.

Motor surges then cuts out

Hi, a common fault on these machines is that the tacho generator on the rear end of motor comes apart. If no feedback from the tacho generator is sensed power to the motor is cut. To check to see if it this causing the problem firstly disconnect machine from the power supply. Then lay machine on its back. On the rear end of the motor is the tacho generator . What sometimes occurs is that the plastic screw securing the tacho magnet to the end of the armature unscrews itself. To remove the tacho coil pry it out from motor casing, its the round piece with 2 wires coming out of it then check to see if the small magnet is fastened tightly to the end of the armature, if not screw it back together. Refit tacho coil into its seating, if its a loose fit some glue may be used to secure it . I think this would be the first thing to check and a cost effective fix. This mainly happens to machines fitted with Sole/Zem motors. Hope this helps . Regards Nigel.

Hi both, ok thanks.

Hi Nigel,

OK, I'll try and check that. This tacho generator, would it cause the motor to stop completely?

Is there any way I can up load a video I took, so that you can see exactly how it is behaving?

Many thanks.

Hi Nigel,

My sister's washing machine is 30 mile away from me, and I'd like to know as much as possible before I drive there.

Can I send you the video of the machine, for your opinion on the possible fault, before I visit my Sister?

Thanks

Fault description.

Hi , you described the fault/ symptoms very well. This fault would stop the motor as if no signal is received by the timer module it cuts the power to the motor. The motor will accelerate briefly then stop otherwise the motor would rev uncontrolled. If you go to youtube and search Zanussi tacho coil there some posts which show the part concerned. Hope this helps, regards Nigel

Hi Nigel,

OK, thanks very much for confirming that my description made sense, and that explanation of the fault shown by the motor.

I'll do a search on you tube as you suggest. And then this Saturday, I'll take a drive to my Sister and look at the motor as you described previously. I'll let you know what I find and take some more pics of the insides.

Is the only way to see the motor from under it? I couldn't see any way to remove the back of the machine. It all seems to be a one piece casing to the exterior of the washing machine.

Thanks again.
