Electronic ignition location

From what I've noticed, it looks like older gas ranges that had electronic ignition had two ignitors, one between each pair of burners, where a pilot flame would be on a pilot lit range.

Most modern gas ranges appear to have one ignitor for each burner, and it's placed right next to each.

Does this have to do with having sealed vs non-sealed burners? And do non-sealed burner gas ranges still have the ignitors positioned between the burners?

My 1995 Whirlpool 30" has the ignitors where a pilot would be for the right and left side, the oven has a spark thing in the back of the broiler to light a pilot. Always worked fine. Plus always worked in a power outage with a lighter both top and oven.

I guess that older designs just adapted the pilot design to be electric ignition.
That and that perhaps early, the ignition system was expensive, so sharing one saved cost.

Today, spark ignition is a cheap system and designs since probably have been revised.

My Frigidaire Compact30 electric range doesn't have any ignitors, at least that I can see.
