Good for Elton John

If anyone can make it work for Elton John, it would be Timbaland. He has helped quite a few artists break into the Hip-Hop scene. The latest is Nelly Furtado with her new hit c.d. "Loose" featuring Timbaland.

Many of us scoffed when the Rolling Stones went 'disco' with Miss You, but that's considered a classic, now, so who knows? My gut tells me middle-aged white British men aren't best suited to hip-hop, but Elton has pulled off many other stylistic flourishes successfully in the past.

In addition to being very sexy IMO, Timbaland is very talented. I love "Promiscuous" and actually that entire CD. Promiscuous is my ringback tone.

It will be interesting to see what the two of them come up with. A lot of people squawk about Nelly and how different this CD is from her other work, and I remember many saying this to me about Gwen Stefani's later work which I also really like, but how else does one grow but to try new things?

You are so right Scott. I would have not even bought any of Nelly's cd's before this one. It's all about what is popular, and what people are buying. And people are no longer buying the old style of popular music.

Elton John is an extremely talented performer. I can't believe he is stooping that low...it's just as bad as Madonna making children's books...it's just out of place! I'm sorry to offend those who like hip-hop, but I just don't see any musical talent in that genere of music. Elton John doing hip-hop is sort of like getting a string quartet to perform at a tractor pull!

lol! It's really not "stooping that low" It is called keeping up with the times. No offense taken, btw

Although I'm not a fan (at all) of hip-hop, Elton John's music lately sounds like he's not far from retirement. I'm an old fan of his (from at least the early 70's) & I've pretty much followed him along all these years. He does need to revive himself somehow. Hip-hop is young, how many 59 year olds do hip hop out there? ...and he's already gone disco.

Last 4th of July, Elton did a televised concert in Philly, and it was NOT good. He was just going through the motions, shouting instead of singing, etc. Maybe hip-hop will give him some new inspiration.

though Elton doing urban r&b is risky (remember ethel mermans disco album?) i have to defend the relevancy of hip-hop. the same way disco was put down in the 70s (too BLACK, too GAY) is the same way folks view urban music (too BLACK). art is for inspiration. obviously hip-hop is *registering* with many. many see their own feelings and experience. the remarkable difference between rock/pop and urban r&b reflects the vastly different experiences of different peoples. that being said, alot of young people DO seem inspired by music/movies/tv to be rude/vulgar/aggressive.

Elton John has so much talent. It would be a shame to see him become a "has been" like Wayne Newton or some other forgotton artist. To remain in the mainstream an artist must evolve. Madonna's music does not sound like it did in the early 1980's. She has kept up with the times very well. Her latest album "Confessions on a Dance Floor" is very good, and it is the first Madonna c.d. I have purchased since the late 1980's. This album is also a Hip Hop style. Would like to see Elton John evolve also, so we can continue to enjoy his talent.
I can recall an interview featuring Elton John at the Grammy's a few years ago that quoted him saying that the Rap/Hip-Hop style was something that Elton himself did understand and appreciate. So it is not a shock to me that he wants to be involved with this style of music. I figure it like this... It has been at least 10 years since I purchased an Elton John c.d. (How long has it been for anyone else?) If his music is evolves to a fresh style that I can enjoy again, I will be very pleased to be able to purchase more of his music again.

I have "Songs From the West Coast."

I have only listened to it once. ICK!!!

And I am a long time Elton fan.

I joked to my partner that getting off the drugs and booze might have been good for Elton's health but not good for his music.

Chris.
