Enameled washer outer tub help.

Hi everybody I really need some advice here. I recently had to replace the heater in my Electra GL2 as the heating cycle kept tripping the power. On removing the heater it's heavly scaled and charred in a couple of places. See pics. I beleive that the faulty heater has caused damage to the outer tub. It would appear to have removed some of the enaamel from the tub in those areas and has started to rust. Is there any way this can be repaired. Please help.

Hi there years ago I repaired a servis outer tub, sand it down and use something like finnigans number 1 primer then a couple of coats of hammerrite , it should last a long while. Wow you must have hard water down there , ours is so soft you never get any scale in the kettle never mind washer !

Take a look at this pic of my Indesit 092. I gave the area a light sanding, treated it with Kurust and finished off with Pratley's Putty. I then sanded the putty to the shape of the drum. You can then apply some Hammerite, although I never bother with that.

Hey Mathew,

That's epic limescale! The rust is easy to sort, everyone has different methods, personally I'd get the worst off with 80 grit aluminium oxide paper, some rust killer and hammerite should sort it for a couple more decades! Halfords has the bits you need if in a hurry.

I reckon that the scale has corroded the element, allowing water to reach the element core and causing a short. Sometimes on older heating elements the powder that insulates the core from the outer absorbs moisture if left unused for a while, and resetting the breaker til it dries will sort it (Baby Bellings are notorious for this apparently), but the scorch marks on your element indicate a problem.

Have you guys got an element for it?

I have never seen scale on anything to this degree. It looks like the heater was patched over with concrete! I have seen field stone foundations in old houses that have less mortar than your heating element!
I'd replace it if possible and as for the drum, I'd sand it down and apply a product like POR-15 (rust inhibitor and proofer) to prevent any further damage.

Although its mostly Matts Baby I can confirm we have a new heater for it but its probably a project for next summer when we can sort the rust etc outside!!.

And yup thats a SERIOUS ammount of scale- gotta be the most Ive ever seen on an element!
