TEAR IT APART!!! I said this rare bird deserved a proper go. I'll spare you the teardown of the blower as it has been covered earlier BUT here's the scoop on pulling the cabinette which will enable you to get to the element, hi limit, door switch and the like. Take the wiring off of the stats, the drum lite, the sensor ring, and motor (marking which wires go where) and let hang. Remove the 6 pozi screws on the side and remove. I have a special dolly for such things to make it easier.
A picture of the inside of a HOH. Not much to see after all. You can see how things can fall inbetween the front of the drum and the front of the cabinette and short the element!
The mechanism exposed. The base is all nasty and this machine has a date with a good blow from the air compressor. I can't leave it like this... You can see the holes in the front of the drum where the heat enters. Heat enters all around hence the "Halo of Heat" label. You can also see the wiring for the sensor bars that are built into the baffles for the moisture sensing electronic control.
This, kids, is where you need to install a new front felt seal to prevent ugly things like shorted elements and the such. Part number 311534. You use hi temp adhesive and draw a small bead around the drum lip. Mount the seal and let dry while attacking the rest... This seal is a MUST if you want to do this properly unless you get your jollies changing elements...
After a good blow (let it go people... LOL) and wipe down of the base and frame, we are finally ready to start putting this dryer puzzle back together.
Cool machine! I have a gas model HOH, but I seem to doubt your s was manufactred in 1960, just based on the archives. Mine is 1973. Perhaps 1970 or so, when Maytag made that control panel switch from the flat front to the angle dashboard?
I had a used blower impeller available, thank goodness. A word of warning. The black bakelite blower impeller is N.L.A.!!! It will be getting harder to find them! Anyway, I cleaned the pulley shafts and lubed the main drum bearing. Using (what else!) new belts, The mechanism is cleaned and ready for the cabinette!
The cabinette is ready to go. Make sure the new front felt seal isn't getting pinched as you line up the opening. Reinstall with the screws on the sides and re-attach the wiring.
Here's some video of the drivetrain while it runs. There is some shake due to my reaching around and changing to damp dry to have the unit shut down. This dryer is sooo quiet.
