Ending "May is Maytag month" with a bang!

We're starting to look like a dryer...

I had a used blower impeller available, thank goodness. A word of warning. The black bakelite blower impeller is N.L.A.!!! It will be getting harder to find them! Anyway, I cleaned the pulley shafts and lubed the main drum bearing. Using (what else!) new belts, The mechanism is cleaned and ready for the cabinette!

The cabinette is ready to go. Make sure the new front felt seal isn't getting pinched as you line up the opening. Reinstall with the screws on the sides and re-attach the wiring.

Philip, you are also right. RevvinKevin called me on the phone to 'correct' me on the date while I was posting the pictures. Oh well, I KNEW it was 1970 but have no idea how 1960 got stuck in my head! Still... I'm very happy with how this dryer turned out! Barring anything unforseen, this should last a while longer yet!

There's actually something relaxing yet exciting at the same time reworking one of these classics! It gives you a sense of ownership when you put some sweat into it. It simply amaizes me that this dryer works so well after 39 years yet now she can celebrate a 're-birthday'. Oh how Maytag has forgotten what they learned since this one rolled out of Newton.

Questions

So did the blower impellor just break, or was something jammed in it?

Also, I've always wondered how those baffle sensors connect to the rest of the wiring. Are there slip rings on the rear of the drum somewhere?

This is a HOT dryer! And, no - thankfully HOH dryers aren't hot... lol. This would be right there at the end of the 906 production. IIRC, it was sometime in late '70, early '71.

There is something to be said about the '06 series and all push buttons. While the earlier 160/750 washer and dryers are quite stunning, the A906/D906 pair makes a statement. I can imagine what a set of these would be like in turquoise or sunny yellow.

Great job on the clean-up and rebuild! Thankfully I have a few spare blower assemblies around to keep me going till I'm 80!

I'm the same way when I get a new one to work on and clean out...I can't contain myself...can't get to it fast enough!

Question....is there a high air flow from the blower?..it doesn't look like it's turning fast...just wondering....never seen the insides of one of these design...

Cornutt, the self lubricating blower bearing actually dried up and siezed. As far as the sensor, there is a metal contact ring around the support right by the drum. Then there's a spring loaded brush that rides on it while the other leg of the drum sensor path passes thru the drum bearing to ground. Next day or so, I'll shoot a picture of the rung/brush.

Martin, the blower is a separate small pulley that is about the same size as the motor pulley. The main drive belt touches the motor, blower and the reduction pulley that drives the drum. The blower would be turning about the same speed as the motor pulley so airflow is decent. I think the later model Maytag dryers with the blower directly mounted on the motor shaft had improved airflow...

I have gotten more maytags this month than I know what to do with...a few I just turned away....running low on machine funds...

but what nice finds there were...but not as nice of a find as Revvinkevin found in "WASHMEUP"...there has to be a very interesting story behind that name!....lol

Wow what a beauty congrats on that Dryer Those maytags are my favorite models they are so hard to find I often wonder why they are not around today ? I would guess they just were either too expensive or just did not sell well I believe they were one of the best dryers Maytag ever made they were so quiet you can bearly hear them run .I have two of those dryers one in sunny yellow and one in Coppertome they are a prize in my maytag collection Enjoy John
