Good things come to those who wait I guess. I was grabbing old birdcages in the thrift store today when I glanced over and saw this Eureka vac sitting there. It's called a Eureka Vanguard model, two speeds, cord retract, nifty cord holder, and a gold brocaid looking square top bag. Sliding pile height adjustment. The bags in good shape, a few minor scuffs on the body, nothing awful, and it purrs beautifully. What surprised me is how heavy it is. This one is made in Canada by a co. called Onward Mfg. Kitchener Ontario. Next a convertible or Dial a Matic please..

There was also at the same store an Eatons Viking 7 program Filter Flo, but it was sold, they were asking $70. I'm guessing it was newer than mine, probably one of the last models with the boring white painted control panel, no chrome in site. Smelled a wee bit musty inside. Also for $70 a newer Maytag dryer, I couldn't move it to find the model #

Pete...only you could find that wonderful couch

and then the vacuum to match! How fun using that around the house. The square cord retractor is interesting. Is it a vinyly or more fabric-like bag, or kind of a rayon feel to it?

Also, was curious about the clip/grab affair that appears to retain the cord by the handle. Is that just like an eyelet that the cord feeds through?

Keven, the bags more vinyl feeling. The cord clip holds the cord up out of the way, then you squeeze it on the other side of the handle, it loosens and the cord automatically retracts.

PeteK:That looks like a REALLY NICE Eureka vac-Sounds like its made of METAL-not plastic.and a neat cordreel-and the bag.Does it use the "F&G" bags? The swap shops around my area-I am still looking.

Yup, it's all metal...what are F&G bags.. the one in there now is a generic bag, with the paper tube that goes part way up then into the main bag. Have you any idea the age of this model? E2080. I think it's a keeper.

Yes-sounds like it can use "Eureka "F&G" bags-its a bag type# that has the paper feed tube and used in Eureka, Koblentz, and Royal Type"A" bag vacuums-the F&G ones will fit Royal A.Sounds like a BETTER machine than what Eureka puts out today.Would guess it could date back to the 60's.If the "F&G" bags are available in your area-should be -you have many brands to choose from-Riccar makes some excellent ones-expensive-but excellent filtration.clogs less quickly than the traditional single layer paper ones as well.

Dates of the Vanguard...

Pete,
That Vanguard would date from about 1969-1970, somewhere in there and was Eureka's TOL upright. Its ALL metal, and at least for the US models would have featured the NEW Vibra Groomer I brush roller.
It was available in 2 versions, either with a painted or chrome motor hood.
Your machine does not have its original bag though. That gold "tapestry" bag is from the later 1972 Golden Vanguard series. The original bag on your machine would have been off-white fabric, with a green "leather" square top. At least thats what the Americn models looked like anyway.
In any case, they were EXCELLENT vacuums, quiet, easy to push, and cleaned very well.
I recommend using it to clean your house some, you will like it!
Congrats!
Jeff

Wow Pete, what a find!! The "boxtop" bag is one of my favorites! I hardly ever see these machines anymore--glad you saved one! Does the motor have the "Eureka whine" to it?

Jeff, did any Eurekas from this era come with the trigger switch?

I like the Viking Filter-Flo machines as well...only FF's with a side-opening lid!

Jeff. thanks for the info..btw I'm looking at the brushroll and it appears to be made of metal, not really a roll, sort of like a bar that's twisted helical..one side brushes, the other side a beater bar, appears the brushes slide out for replacement, which this one might need.

Austin; This is the first Eureka I've ever heard, it has a different sound, not loud or unpleasant at all, and winds down when you turn it off. I like the sound.

Neat machine, bet it is better made than the new ones too, perfect match for your decor! Good find. I like that cord set up.

answers answers..

Austin: Pete's Eureka pre-dates the "touch power" handle grip. The Golden series models that replaced it were the first with that feature in 1972.
The motor in Pete's machine would not sound like the models you have either, it pre-dates the 1400 series "blender" motor as well. Pete's model would sound like a slow running Sanitaire, or as one friend I know put it "A Sanitaire trying to sound like a Hoover Convertible"
The motor design in Pete's vacuum dates back to the late 1940's when Eureka introduced its vertical motor upright.

BRUSH ROLL: Pete, that brush roll is the Vibra Groomer I, and was Eureka's first metal brush roller. The body is aluminum, and the brushes AND beater bars are replacable. You're correct on the helix too, it was designed to move air and improve pickup. Brushes should be easily available from any vacuum dealer who sells Sanitaire, as that brush roll is still used today in Sanitaire uprights.
The Vibra Groomer I also featured sealed ball bearings, and it took a long time for them to get noisy! This brush roll was used in Eureka's better uprights until the middle 1980's. The Vibra Groomer II was introduced in 1979, and used throughout Eureka's line.
Pete, get some new brushes for that machine, install a new bag and belt and clean with it. You'll be amazed at what it picks up!

Pete....

...great find indeed, and I'm with Scott -- the cord setup is cool!

Hey, being the generous guy I am -- I'll take a couple of Kirby's off your hands to help you make room for this guy. No need to thank me, I'm happy to do it for a friend!

Hehe -- I see "heavy metal" is a theme in your vac collection. Way to go!

John

Another beautiful find Pete!! You must have some great places up there with all the neat things you find. I remember that machine well. Seems like they also had a matching caniser vacuum, same color etc. It was the canned ham shape if I remember correctly. Have fun using it. Terry

Interesting brushroll info Jeff...thanks. what was the change between the I & the II versions?
These Eureka uprights had an available attachment kit as well didn't they but were somewhat awkward to use, remove the sole plate and attach another one with a hose port.

Pete,
The VG I was the helix design, black bristles, not a cylinder shape. but more like a twisted thing, designed to move air.

The VG II is a cylinder, chrome steel, with small beater bars. It was supposed to 'massage' the carpet 20,000 times a minute.

In ball bearing versions, both work very well, although I prefer the 4-brush version of the VG I over the 2 brush/beater bar one.
The attachment set was DEEELUXE!!! For your model it came in a plastic caddy, and included hose, converter, 2 straight and one curved chrome wands, upholstry nozzle, dust brush, crevice tool, and floor brush. The converter clamped on the front over the brush roller.
You're thinking of the earlier versions that attached to the top.
Think I'll get the camera out..

VG I & VG II

The VG II is on the left in the Sanitaire Blue, Note the three nubby beater bars on the right side of its belt. The VG I is on the right in the Gold Eureka
