Mrs. Gilmore-gilmore-gilmore....HOW'S GARY?!?!?!

There's a strange on in the jungle...

I was living in HOuston and working at Sound Warehouse when the Judys were in full throttle. Saw them several times, best show was when they opened for the B-52s at Jones Hall. Saw Elvis Costello there on his "Imperial Bedroom" Tour, too.

Ah...good times!

DING-DING-DING-DING-DING!!! We have a winner, folks!

Charbee, you'd have accrued a basketful of bonus points just for knowing who The Judy's were; You win the whole freakin' lottery for actually having seen them---and with the B-52s, no less!

It was a great time for alternative/indie music, wasn't it? Sigh. I saw so many wonderful bands up-close in dingy little clubs back in the late 70s/early 80s.

heehee...

Thanks for the prizes! At that point, working in a record store and living in Houston was good for seeing lots of music! Random tidbits from "the day":

The Judy's first "EP" was called "The Wonderful World of Appliances"...really, it was...on it was not only "Mrs. Gilmore, How's Gary" but also "Vacation In Tehran" (a funny li'l ditty about the hostages in Iran: "...special group rate for fifty or more!" Was at their "Farewell Show" at the Agora Ballroom, when they split up so one of them could go to dental school or something silly and grown-up like that.

Got to see the B52s three different times, twice in Houston, and once here in Austin...the Austin show was at SouthPark Meadows (which is now a hideous spread of ten square miles of concrete and every bland box store known to man...so sad). This was on the "Whammy" tour, they all came out dancing to a tape, and the tape stopped...awkward moment w/booooo's, but all was well when they got behind their instruments and "danced that mess around".

Saw Joan Armatrading on what I thought was her finest tour, at a small venue...when she had "Walk Under Ladders" out. Great record. Of course, all the grrrrls were in the front row for "Willow" !

Saw the freakin' Talking Heads on their tour when Tina (the bass player) was pregnant with their first kid...at CARDI's in Houston...this place was usually a kicker/redneck dance hall with a glittering, rotating, mirrored cowboy boot above the dancefloor...the Heads rocked it. This was the tour when they had 9 people on stage, absolutely killer.

Saw Devo at some small college auditorium on the "New Traditionalists" tour ("We're Through Bein' cool...eliminate the ninnies and the twits!")

Had tix to see Pretenders...before any of 'em had died...didn't get off work, so I couldn't go...somewhere I still have the "untorn" ticket.

On the other side of the musical spectrum, I also got to see the great Ella Fitzerald at Rockefeller's, a cool club at the time. She was totally blind by this time (1981/82) and "felt" her way onstage by touching the piano and bits of the drum kit on her way to the mic stand. The show was great, she was in perfect voice, as always. There was a bit of oddness with her pianist at that time (Jimmy Rowles). When she introduced him, he just stood up, and kept standing, looking a little senile, really. She finally had to tell him to sit down...but the music was amazing. I'm so glad I got to see her before she died!

See, us old geezers are still good for sump'n I s'pose...and we loves our Maytags, too! ;-)
