Years ago, it was common for a handyman to make a grinder out of an old washing machine motor.

Old washer motors from those days were used in other tools besides grinders.It was common for a tool-such as a table saw,sander,drill press to be sold without motors.You supplied your own-from the old washer and saved.Same with outdoor power equipment-lawn mowers,tillers,often sold without motors to use the one you salvaged off and old mower or one you found in the trash.Old motors-gas or electric-often lasted longer than the appliance they were first used in!
