Unique filter.
Yeah, I've seen a few Malleys Whirlpools with that type of lint filter. I believe that attachment is unique to the Malleys style of Whirlpool which is found in Australia. It is very similar to the filters found in US Speed Queens back in the '60s.
When the agitator shifts directions, the paddles built around the rim of the pan will shovel wash water upwards and into the pan where the lint can be trapped. It does capture lint okay, but from what I've seen, its effectiveness is debatable. I still think it's a pretty clever design nonetheless.

I have a new inbox one I should get it out and play with it. It’s definitely one of the more effective agitator mounted lint filters I’ve ever seen I did use it a little bit many years ago.
The only complaint with it is it takes up usable room and the wash tub, but it certainly traps a lot more lint than the Norge burp a lator or the Maytag lint filters inside the agitator because
It scooped a lot of water through it.

John is right, they take up a lot of room in the tub but are very cool to watch. Speed Queen had one that came standard with many models over the years. SQ also had one with a softener dispenser ring around the top edge of the filter pan.
It was pictured in the user guide for our 1962 Whirlpool, related to lower-featured models that didn't have the recirculating Magic Mix Dispenser Filter.
I'm guessing these types of filters only work with a full tub of water?

Didn’t realise they were pretty common, I have never seen one personally.
Yes, it does take a fair amount of room in the tub which makes removing clothes annoying.
It also only works in a full load as well.
It does remind me of the Norge washers(and Westinghouse) though, even though they have completely different systems it is a similar way of removing lint.

These were also marketed to users of wringer washers where the larger tub was not so compromised by the space this filter took up. It slipped down over the agitator so it was easily removed for loading and unloading automatics. I had seen them in old appliance magazines and happened to find one on eBay some decades ago. I think it is somewhere in the Belchville museum.
