These look identical....
....to my 1987 (September) set except that the font for "Electronic Fabric Care" is different and this black set looks to have a chrome trip strip between the top and the cabinet that mine does not.
Perhaps this black set are 1988 models?
I can't see the left side of the control panels in these pictures. Mine say "Limited Edition by Kenmore".

yes, 1988...that's when I got mine...chrome strip, clothes hanger for the side, and the dryer was a 27" unit, lint filter inside the door opening....
this should also have the 'toss to the front' option on the dryer....open the door, there should be two push buttons, press both at the same time, and a 3 second spin will toss items to the front for unloading...

I didn't notice....
....that the lint filter moved to the door opening. "Toss to the front" option sounds cool! Makes me wish I had the 1988 models instead of my 1987 models!
Still- mine are now 30 years old and NO major repairs. AMAZING!
If I lived closer to this 1988 set, I'd pick them up in a heartbeat!

My friend Jerry had that set in White, with the 27" dryer.
Nice set, but the touchpads are a dealbreaker for me.
Why did they not keep the lint screen on top? I thought that was a Whirlpool hallmark of sorts. Did it have any impact on reliability?

from what I seen on the 29" top mounted filter versus the 27" front mounted filter.....
size of the cabinet was a consideration, to fit certain laundry room spaces, and doorways...where Kenmores were both 29" cabinets, limited spacing for some installs, now they would fit...
the rear of the 27 has a 2" extension on the rear....but did allow for venting options if needed, the 29 was vented strictly out the rear...
I like the 27 for the drum rollers located front and rear.....
if I am correct, the 27 offered a bigger drum.......
the down side to the front filter, trapped lint a lot....required opening the machine to clean out more often....most times pulling out the filter, and you would find lint on the front and back.....
no matter which one, these dryers offered the best drying care for every load....I favor this over every other dryer I have...that 'Soft Heat' makes all the difference in the world...

I picked up a 1999ish set about a year ago...I think this was the last series made....got them for 50.00....according to the owner, just had the dryer serviced, and it stopped heating again....I tore into it today, the wire on the thermal fuse had pulled off.....who would have guessed.....

I can't say enough to express to Phil my appreciation for his diligent efforts to search out appliances and post on this forum. Phil and others do for many of us what we sometimes can't find time to do. My hat is off to you Sir!
Here's the crazy thing. Most days, I spend 10-15 minutes searching my local CL and still I never caught this ad - whew! I must be slipping. I've been searching for a set like this for a long time. Having previously owned an Almond set of the exact type, I know how great the units are. They do a great job of washing and thoroughly rinsing. I'd temporarily stored them with a couple when moving, but they soon disappeared?
So I called the seller, worked out the details and picked them up yesterday afternoon. They are beautiful and in excellent condition. Will be connecting later this week. More than anything, I appreciate the flexibility of combining wash/soak/prewash and being able to modify the length of time along with loading all detergent/bleach/softener to be able to satisfy 2 separate wash fills and 2 deep rinses with the softener automatically dispensed in the last rinse. One of the most flexible top loading washers ever invented IMHO. Another example of a time when Kenmore/Whirlpool worked collaboratively and created exceptional results.

yeah, we can't THANK Phil enough.....
one of his postings was how I got the set I have now....
I have some sales brochures here somewhere, with pics of models that never made it into stores or production....as in 95, there was one I wanted, and couldn't get it...
my 95 had a serious sound deadening package, Quiet Pak.....there was a fiber board panel that covered the bottom with thick insulation.....
there were problem/glitches with this years machines.....they had to exchange 7 sets for me until they got one that functioned like it should.....plus there was a 2 month waiting period to get the first delivery....
one of his postings was how I got the set I have now....

Were the 27" known as a "Flat Back" Dryer ? I remember buying a 29 and had to go to a 27 Flat back as the 29 wouldn't fit through the doorway in a older home...
that's the other way around Eddie....
the 29's were a flat back, the 27's had the extension on the rear....
i ran into that issue once....I needed the flat back of the 29, and the width of the 27....
and on some installs, you had to have 6" of clearance from the wall for account of the extrusion and venting...so the washer had to be pulled out 6 inches as well to make them match....

Thanks Martin...and anyone else who caught something from my postings. I know plenty others here who provided the same help as me. But.......I think Louie(Ultramatic)deserves a mention here since I was inspired by his Vintage Appliance/Electronics and ads postings to become a fanatic(at times) searching for CL goodies.
Though it's harder to find "vintage" or "retro" stuff of your top wanted list, it's still within the realm of possible. These seem to be more often found..in estate sales or other sources. Anyways, I have learned much here, but I'm still feeling pretty dumb. As long as I don't become Dumb and Dumber, there's hope? lol.

The 27" dryer is also the one used as a match to the Calypso washers. It does stick out further than the 29" models as Yogitunes states above.

A bubble burst: the electronic panel on the washer is not working correctly. It works fine for regular cycles but does not respond to any of the cycle modifiers - prewash, soak, 2nd rinse, etc.... Will try to locate a replacement.

you may want to troubleshoot a bit....
my '88 acted up once, would wash, but when it came time to drain/spin, it would sit there.....and you had to SLAM the lid down to get it to finish....
thinking it was the lid switch or the board, but if you tilt the control panel, theres a silver box on the right hand side, I thinks it the voltage regulator, once Sears replaced it, it worked fine....
oddly enough, when I got my '95 set, I gave this one to my sister, can't figure it out, but this washer would not work right in her house.....brought it back to mine, and it worked like it should.....something about the electrical in her house....

Yes, if there is anything in the household that uses the electrical wiring to communicate, appliances can be affected. When I had my Kenmore pair, both the washer and the dryer would turn themselves on and off at will. I had a spare TV that would turn itself off at relatively the same time every night and the internal clock wouldn't stay set.
Turns out, the electric company was beaming a signal to control the electric water heater and air conditioning every 6 hours for energy management. The downside to being on the cutting edge for smart home management in the late 90's I guess.
