fabric softener..oh here we go!!

Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

Right now, I'm working down a bottle of ALL Fresh Rain, then I will be on to Snuggle Emerald somethingoranother. Softener sure lasts a long time when you only use about a teaspoon in a front loader.

Static electricity in dryer-dried clothing

If you do not grossly overdry fabrics that are prone to developing static in a Filtrator dryer, you don't need to use softener to prevent it from forming. A physicist explained to me that since there was minimal air movement through the dryer, the water actually stayed in the same chamber (for the most part)and only changed state from liquid to vapor and back to liquid, the dissimilar electrical charges are not created.

Fabric Softeners

Whatever happened to the nice light clean fresh scents of the softeners when they first came out many years ago? I just use a LITTLE softener in the light and colored clothes. Never in whites or towels. Softeners I truly hate are Downy Clean Breeze, (the clothes smell like candy), Downy with Febreze, (YUK) and most of the Snuggle products except the original. Mrs. Meyers makes a great lavender scent. It is a watery softener, not the wazy kind that we are used to. Mrs. Meyers also makes a great laundry detergent. You can get in Cracker Barrell restaurants or order it on the web.

I loved the fragrance of Final Touch, as well as old Tide, Cheer and Dash. I liked the smell of Ajax powder, too. The new heavy floral scents are to appeal to the Hispanic population because they put the names of the fragrances in Spanish on the front of the bottles. I hope it is ok to say that without sounding biased. I guess those fragrances are in these products in Latin America. I will go on record here and say that I loved the flavor of Quaker vanilla Frescavena so much that when I could not find it for an extended period of time, I managed to come up with a very close formulation for a fraction of the price so I make it myself now.

I've also noticed the popularity of candy and floral scents taking over the softener market in the last few years. You can still get April Fresh Downy in the non-super concentrated formula which isn't too objectionable if used sparingly. All makes a Clean Fresh scent that isn't too bad in moderation as well. I use very little softener in most loads, rarely in towels or linens, especially if I'm hanging sheets and bedding outside. I really liked a few of the scents Mike sent from the UK back in June.

Ever since I took over the laundry from mom, I have been a heavy user of Tide and Downy... I usually use the normal amount of Tide, but 1 1/2 the amount of Downy reccomended, and I use Downy on EVERYTHING! (well, clothing wise) Although I thought I read somewhere that Downy is a good substitute for hair conditioner? Anyway, I have done quite a bit of experimenting outside of Downy, I have used Snuggle, Suavitel, All, Final Touch, and Sun and Earth (Earth friendly.) I haven't really experimented with other detergents, I did try Fresh Start once, I LOVED it, but it left a LOT of soap scum on my Fisher Paykel. Is there any particular detergent or fabric softener that I should try?

It may be that the humidity of an area effects the way clothes smell. In the summer here you can go outside for ten min. and your clothes smell and not fresh! I like to use Downy "Simple Pleasures" Lilly and Jasmine on my better clothes and linnens, work clothes get Gain.

I like the liquids. Right now I have two Snuggles on the go, Botanical Bliss and Cuddle-up something. Both are sensory overload when you remove the bottle cap, the Botanical Bliss especially. I only use about half the recommended amount because they're just too stinky otherwise. The other one who lives here likes his Bounce sheets better, I'm not so enamored with them and usually rip them in two if I do use one.

Pete, bounce sheets? Ripping? Oh Bounce dryer sheets! I see now! ROFL! I thought, well, just forget it!

I loved the smell of original Final Touch-with bluing for extra whiteness :) Now it seems fabric softeners are all about extreme floral or powdery scents. Don't they know men wash their clothes too? They new liquids also seem too concentrated, they are gooey and leave a film on towels that makes them less absorbent. Back to unscented Bounce sheets for me.

Vinegar

I fill the fabric softner dispenser with vinegar, clean fresh, no static cling and items are still absorbant. I can not stand to use a towel that has been treated with even a small amount of softner...used to love the smell of old Downey but my grandmother's towels were not absorbant at all.

Free & Sensitive for me!!!

The dyes and fragrances in detergent, fabric softeners, dryer sheets, etc. irritate my skin, so I can only use Downy Free & Sensitive or Bounce Free. (My detergents are also "free".) I only use fabric softeners and/or dryer sheets during the winter months and then only in every other load.

Ensueno gives Downy a run for its money

Years ago, I used to use Final Touch and Purex liquid bleach. I've also tried Snuggle and one store brand fabric softener. Currently, my two faves are Ensueno sunflower and Suavitel Morning Sun. They both come in yellow bottles. Of the two, I like the Ensueno the best. It has a pleasant aroma that lasts but is not overpowering. IMOP Ensueno gives Downy a run for its money. It's priced to please, too. I have purchased a bottle on sale for 99 cents!

Old vs. New

Several people have commented on the "old" scents being better and I agree. I remember the Downy, Tide, DUZ, and Ivory Snow my Grandmother used smelling so clean and fresh....now you get scents that smell sickeningly sweet, even with cleaners. Wouldn't it be great if manufacutrers would come back with the "original" scents to go with the new ones on shelves?

Hi, my name is MaytagMom and I use fabric softeners....

And right now...I am in the classic abuser mode:

1-btl of Suavibrisa-Tropical Breeze
1-btl of Suavitel-Lilac
1-btl of Suavitel-Colores Oscuros
1-btl of Suavitel-Fresco Aroma de Sol
1-btl of Mexican Downy-Floral
1 btl of Suavitel-Sin Enjuague
1 btl of Gain-Original scent

The Suavibrisa is something I just found recently at (of all places, a Mexican meat market/grocery store)
They have a new detergent there, I am going to go back and get this weekend.

Suavitel Morning Sun is definitely "loud." It didn't dawn on me for several days what is that scent every time I walk through granny's utility room. I don't find it unpleasant, though.

Yes it is Frigilux

Not counting the detergents, I won't go there now...I am still in awe of the egg chair thread right now...

I would have a wash-in, but I only have one washer & dryer.

Now for the "other" bar....it's going to get well stocked this weekend too! LOL
