In another thread, someone asked about the oven safety of Farberware's phenolic handles, and I responded from memory, saying 350 degrees Fahrenheit, which is the usual recommendation for Bakelite.

Today, I received a selection of original Farberware brochures I purchased on eBay, and one of them, entitled A Guide to Panhandling, is the Use and Care Guide issued in the early '70s.

In it, Farberware claims oven safety up to 425 degrees Fahrenheit. There were three caveats:

- Your Farberware Cookware can be used in the oven at temperatures up to 425° (make sure the oven is properly calibrated).

- Do not put Farberware Utensils under the broiler unit when the unit is on.

- Remove Farberware Pans from the oven with pot holders. While the phenolic handles and knobs are oven-safe up to 425°, they will be hot.

So, I hope that answers any questions about the safety of Farberware handles in the oven.

John:

It doesn't.

I prize the condition of my Bakelite handles; I've seen too many rough and dull and blistered and cracked from oven and dishwasher use.

If something needs the oven, there's Corning Ware a-plenty here in my house.

I've seen my wife wrap the handles of a dutch oven we have with aluminum foil before putting it in the oven.  Does this help prevent damage at all?  Just wondering.

Tim:

Bev's tactic would reflect infrared away from the handles, so there could be a benefit.

I think it would be a small advantage, if any. But it's making her feel like she's doing something to protect the handles, and that's worth something right there. God knows there's a lot that's completely out of our hands nowadays - we need those little things we can control.

No kidding!

As for aluminum foil on handles, I have no idea if it helps or not. Sandy's comment about infrared reflection makes sense. But the aluminum foil will obviously still conduct heat. Plus there is the hassle of putting on aluminum foil. Personally, I'd just use an actual oven baking dish. But...it's not something I'd argue about with a spouse, either, unless it was my prize pan that was potentially being grabbed for oven use. LOL
