Yup, 2 red line trains collided, 4 people died. Apparently there has only been on other collision on the Washington DC Subways, now a total of 7 people have died due to a DC subway accident.

the Red line on Pride Day

I have used Metro alot, but that Sunday was pretty bad- whoever was driving the one we rode, seemed to have some kind of road rage- jack rabbit starts, jerky acceleration, & really quick sudden stops- I also wondered how fast we were going-My opinion of the ride that day was pretty low, compared to the countless other times I have used the system- for some reason, this accident does not come as much of a suprise to me...The Bart system in California , I understand , is as old as the DC Metro, & their record is really good..

hhmm

I lived in dc all my life and probably rode this one before. This is there first accident sense the 80's that was this severe. I think the metro is wonderful and probably one of the cleanest I have ever been on. I would not right it off so quickly. Accidents happen. Nothing is completely safe.

BART in the SF Bay Area runs on dedicated tracks and had MANY teething problems with its computer control system. The system had a problem sensing where trains actually were. The solution included putting scrapers on the wheels to remove rust to improve the electrical positioning signals. This made a system that was supposed to be whisper quiet not so quiet, but I suppose it was a worthwhile price to pay for safety. Other problems included doors failing to open, and once open, failing to close. There have been mishaps with the trains, including fires, and people committing suicide in the stations in front of arriving trains. But as far as I know no BART train has ever collided with another.

Currently BART is saying the entire fleet of cars is in dire need of replacement, and they are looking at a huge project to replace all of them. Money of course is a major issue, with fares constantly going up but the system still needing massive infusions of tax funds.

I hope that if they do get new cars, they will decide to get interiors that can easily be hosed down. The current cars have fabric upholstery and carpeting, which can never be adequately cleaned and the stench on some of the cars is unbearable. I understand from friends who work on the maintenance side of the system that all sorts of disgusting things are left in the cars - including human excrement. Since some people insist on behaving like animals, the cars need to designed as if they are transporting animals.

I think the Metro in DC is one of the best systems in the country. I am always amazed at how clean it is. One summer we rented a townhouse in the DuPont Circle part of town for 3 weeks. This is where a lot of embassies are located. We didn't even rent a car at all, we just used the Metro all the time.
Some of those escalators that go down in the stations are very long and VERY steep. But all in all it's quite an impressive system.

I ride Metro every day....

This accident won't change that. IMO it is better to squish into a subway car like a sardine than comfortably recline in the leather seats of a car in DC gridlock.

Most folks are now refusing to sit in either the front or rear cars of a train. Since, statistically speaking, the chances of the same type of accident happening again are miniscule, well, as sad as it is, at least I can now have my choice of seats in 2 cars per train. I like that. The "urban intimacy" of a subway car is a bit much for me. Small bodies don't like it when big bodies fall on them.

I pray for all of those affected by this horrible tragedy.
