I use
the same Pink liquid softener as my fellow member in the neighboring state of KY that comes in the gallon jug branded Big Value. It does the job of both static cling and softness without leaving any residue in the washer or on your clothes. I do use 3/4 cup when it calls for 1/2 cup because I use a Maytag wringer washer and rinse in it. The tub is huge so just figured it may need a bit more. This softener is only 1.99 here for a gallon. Also, there is no more buildup in the dryer where the clothes rub on the inside. Just my way of softening clothes. I know we all have our favorites and amounts. It smells like I remember the old Stay Puff did my Mom used years ago.

I really like Lenor in the Sunshine (from the Netherlands) because it just smells very summery and fresh and leaves a nice light scent on your clothes. Also, I like the scent of Lenor Peach and Moonflower.

Stopped using it about 5 years ago, and I don't miss it one bit.

I bought a jug of Amway white fabric softener a while ago from a co-worker. Expensive as Persil products but it was good stuff. I can't judge, the way a lot of you can, things like residue. I usually go for the smell and whether it eliminates static or not. Unfortunately, I've heard that Amway is an intolerant, conservative-humping company and, until I am convinced otherwise, won't give them any more of my business.
No fabric softener that I've ever used has made much difference when the clothes are line dried. They always end up stiff unless I'm lucky enough to line-dry on a nice windy day.

@ bajaespuma i thought Amway were an ethical company? In what way are they an intolerant conservative company? I do buy things off them too but won't if they are not. Can you elaborate? Thanks
Fabric Conditioners/Softeners
Do have a purpose on laundry day for many domestic users, and a majority of commercial laundries.
When properly formulated and used modern liquid fabric softeners do not decrease the absorbency of cotton or linen fibers. Because they act to smooth fibers they can decrease the amount of creasing from the final spin process and or allow the ones which do form to be easily ironed out.
Fabric softeners also make tumble drying faster as they cause textiles to "repel" water. While taken to extremes of old yes one could end up with waterproofed fabrics, again modern TOL products wash out with the next laundering.
In combination with sours, bacteriostatic properties and several other final rinse additives (excluding starch and often bluing) fabric softeners pay a certain role for commercial laundries. If nothing else by allowing textiles to dry even a small percentage faster adds up to savings over the course of hundreds of loads dried per month.

How interesting to see such a variety of opinion - from those who prefer no FS at all, folk who enjoy light scents and others who prefer something more powerful.
I agreee that in many cases FS is not necesssary, though I tend to use a little in most washes as I find it helps the creases drop out. I do not iron anything.
Fabric conditioners which I have enjoyed aspects of are kept in stock and used when I feel like it. These include;

My daily driver and all time faveis not one of the above, and has the following qualities....
- It is from the only brand which completely flushes from the drawer leaving no fatty residue behind.
- It has a scent strong enough to leave some presence on fabrics, but not too strong as to waft from garments. Scent is neutral enough so that one does not become tired of it quickly.
- It does not foam up, leaving a residue on the door rubber or clothes. Due to this, and the ease at which it flushes through the drawer, I am comfortable it is not gunking up the machine internals too much. I only use a half dose.

Is that many of the detergents in my stash already leave a wonderful scent on laundry, so why mess with a good thing?
Strictly speaking FS really isn't necessary. Most modern detergent powders aren't nearly has harsh as some of stuff of old, and the liquids certainly leave things feeling soft on their own.

Dryer sheets, but I don't even use those.
I have taken to
blending a Downy Free refill and an April Fresh refill in a large Downy bottle.
I always use softener in every winter load, except for kitchen towels, and I only use it for underwear and bath towels in summer.
Fabric softener makes me happy. For those who are content without using it, fine!

My favourite softener is "Mimosín" aloe vera and white flowers but but the other is in the photos I also like
1)"Ominio bianco" Marseille and "Flor" Marseille.
2)"Bosque verde" talc "Mimosín" aloe vera and white flowers.
3)"Flor" North Meadows
