Had to share this. I was shopping at the Home Depot last night and as always I looked over their offering of LED bulbs. They had this odd looking Phillips 12.5 watt job at the amazing price of $14.97 (reduced from ~$30). I'm not sure if it is a clearance or just mis-priced. I bought two. Its Phillips model 12E26A60 and is stated at being an 800 lumen 60w incandescent replacement. Its strange looking and at first one would think it would generate light like a yellow "bug" lamp but in use it is quite white.

When I got them home I installed one in place of a 12 watt CFL I had in a bedroom. This lamp is brighter, and has a nicer color temperature then the CFL. Also there is no warm-up delay, although there is about a 1/2 second delay at turn on. This lamp is listed as being dimmable, but I didn't try that. I plan to do a little more testing when I get the chance. I'd like to measure actual power draw and power factor. I'm also curious to have a look at it with the spectrum analyzer to see if it creates any radio interference.

All in all this is the first LED bulb I have purchased (out of at least a dozen) that I can see actually doing widespread service in my home. Perhaps the day is coming that LED's will start to take over from the CFL's...

Wow, only $15. Here in the Netherlands the same lamp costs 60 euro!

I am also impressed by this lamp, but I find it too expensive. I am sure that the price will drop in the future so I remain waiting for a good substitute for the incandescent bulb.

I have a very low opinion of CFLs. They won't dim, and every non FL in my house is dimmed. They contain mercury. I bought one anyway, and it failed outright in 9 months, less than the same incandescent for 10 times the price.

So I am very interested in the development of LED socket replacement lighting.

Home Depot follow up

I stopped by a different Home Depot yesterday and they are sold out of the Phillips 12E26A60 lamps. It appears that you can still order them online, maximum quantity of 10.

My suspicion is that they are selling this model off at cost in order to get units out into peoples hands. Possibly a good strategy as it may help sales of the other models. No idea how long the sale will continue...

I tried using one of these in a billiard table lamp last night and it meshed seamlessly with the other 60w incandescent in the fixture!

I did hear the sad news today that Congress delayed the transition date of the Lightbulb Efficiency Standards. I'm sure that Michelle Bachman will be partying tonight. "President Bachmann will allow you to buy any light bulb you want,”...

Not to get overly political, but Congress is trying to Febreze away some of their perceived stench in deference to the upcoming election. Forcing/eliminating buying choices on commodity items stinks AND gets EVERYone's attention.

As production of LED lamps ramps up and the price drops comparable to the price/hour of incands PLUS they're 5 times cheaper to operate, you won't be able to give away an incandescent bulb and it won't be necessary to outlaw them.

That's how stuff is supposed to work.

household LED lights

i use a few LEDs for lights that don't need to be overly bright that on a lot-hall
light, garage light, etc.GE,LG,lights of america are the ones i have used-the LOA
LEDs have simple circuitry, appear to have the diodes in series and a series
ballast capacitor.the GE and LG have sophisticated drive circuitry-the 12v LG LEDs
work equally well on ACorDC 12v-unlike the simpler ones that must be fed 18v dc
to work as well as on 12v AC.

I am for Congress overturning the bulb bans-again---ITS FREEDOM OF CHOICE!!!!!!WAKE UP FOLKS-don't let ANYONE take this away from you.Energy saving and Hi tech bulbs are very nice--but it should be YOUR and YOUR choice alone to use them or any other bulb or appliance.
