Finally Found a Suds Saver on Craigslist

Hi folks, Finally found a Maytag suds saver last evening on CL. It's with a dealer who says he has reconditioned it. He provided a crappy picture in which I cannot see anything, so I've requested more pics. Here is the listing: http://pennstate.craigslist.org/app/5403286901.html
He will send some better pics this evening. I asked how old it was and all he could say is that it is modern. If all looks ok in the pics, we will make a trip tomorrow to inspect closer. What should we be on the lookout for? Is there anything, especially that I could check with him on now before a long trip, that would make this a no go?

Would definitely insist on better photographs.  Also, he should be able to give you a model number!  The washer that's in the center of that photograph is a Frigidaire - not Maytag.

He probably uses that same photo for whichever washer he might be advertising.  I see that a lot from dealers on my local CL.

 

Such laziness would make me skeptical that the machine had been refurbished, or if so, to what degree and whether it was done properly.

 

$250 is a very inflated price.  If he won't offer a money back guarantee (as opposed to a limited warranty that would likely provide questionable repairs at best) I would suggest you "deleaver" yourself from making any deal with him for that machine.

OK, thanks so much for the replies so far. I will proceed with caution. I did ask him what he replaced on it since he said he reconditioned it, to which he has still not replied. Yes, his written grammar leaves much to be desired. He speaks just fine though.
Rp2813 - where should the price be? I researched and can't find anything similar to gauge price.
We know to look carefully at the condition of belts and hoses. Is there anything else that we should examine closely if we do end up going to look at it?

Well, no pics were provided last night or this morning. Now he says maybe this evening he can provide some. Saturday is the only day we have time to make a road trip like this. He doesn't seem to be too interested in making the sale. Would you just pass on this?

best thing is to keep looking around....Ebay, Craigslist, etc.....

what exactly are you looking for?

what caught your interest, that it was a Maytag?, a sudssaver?....

age?, color?, specific model?

keep an eye on shoppers square as well......many members post ads they find, who knows what may turn up....many treasures have been found through the help of others....

Looks like a late '60s one-speed, but standard capacity and not a suds saver.  Nice clean machine though.

 

I had to remove the "s" from https to get to the ad via Google.  Strange, because up until this week, I was having to manually remove that "s" from anything I pasted into the "URL Link to share" field, but now when I access CL, it's just "http" and there's no little padlock icon anymore. 

 

I don't know if it's the gremlins at MS or CL, but it would be nice if they were better at notification.

If I couldn't get the first one for $150.00 or so, I'd pass. That's ONLY after he showed me that it works, and gave some sort of guarantee.

We ended up passing on it.

We've been watching for at least a year, albeit sometimes sporadically, for a suds saver, any brand, or a larger "modern" twin tub. It wasn't a pressing matter until now. Our Samsung bit the dust on Thursday. Anyhow, does anyone recommend a certain brand or have other recommendations on either?

I use a wringer washer that we rescued from a salvage yard. While I love it for washing and saving water, it's not so good at extraction. I only hang my laundry to dry, no dryer. I don't want one. I've been using my Samsung FL to do the rinse and extraction. So things just got kind of urgent.

On a whim yesterday, after we decided to pass on this CL seller, we called around to our local used appliance dealers. One says he has Maytag suds saver in his warehouse. He said they don't put stuff like that on their showroom floor, because no one ever asks for them anymore. He is going to check the condition and test it this week for us. Hopefully this one fits the bill, but we'd like a plan B just in case. I will look closer at the washers you guys have posted when I get a chance. well, you sort of have the makings of a suds saver with the wringer.....

at this point, any machine would work, but you will have to keep an eye on first and second drainings.....

save the wash water in the wringer, and pump the water back to your automatic....let the rinse water go down the drain.....

done this many times in the past.......

A Whirlpool/Kenmore direct drive would fit your bill for the most part......

although preference for a vintage machine would be more fun
