Hi All,

The Hoover Apollo dryers are based on the Early F&P dryers out of NZ. There may be a connection to the UK hotpoint ones, but the early F&P's, International's and Kelvinators were all the same design.

Fan sucks air in through the back panel, pressurises the cabinet and then passes through the element at the back of the drum and out the front. Very simple design with little sealing or ducting or belts to go wrong.

The downside to these early dryers is that the High and Low heat was controlled by time not thermostat. On High the cycling thermostat controls the temp. On low the timer increments the heat on and off on alternate increments and the same thermo controls the max temp as on High. Very simple and cheap to make.

Glad you like them, i do plan on doing a wash but i need to go through a few things before i commit clothes to the machine also i am waiting for the drive belt to arrive, speaking of which has your capacitor arrived?

Hoover only ever imported the Keymatic during the 1960's until the change to the 'matchbox' and then stopped importing the keymatic and imported the more basic British Hoover front loader. Normally only one model and with dual hot/cold intake.

They did manufacture front loaders here from the late 1970's (I think) until about 1998-1999ish. But again, only 2 models. One with a heater and one without otherwise identical models.

What you need to remember is that while front loaders have been available here since the late 1940s Bendix, they were horrendously expensive compared to a wringer, twin tub or later, automatic top loaders.

Biggest selling brands and all top loaders, have tended to be Simpson, Westinghouse, Hoover (top loaders), Malleys-whirlpool during the 60's-80's.

Things have changed now. Fisher and Paykel followed by Simpson/electrolux and then the rest. Hoover no longer exist in whitegoods in this country as they effectively became part of Electrolux as did Westinghouse who appear to be on the way out too...

Hoover were the only manufacturer to build front load machines in Australia...at least as far as I know...

Hi Ron,

I did have another thought during the night about a possible Hotpoint UK connection.

The early F&P washers were Hotpoint clones from the UK. So perhaps the dryers started out as Hotpoint clones also.

....thing is that there are no Hoover washing machines made in or for sale in Australia....

I think I may have to get myself an Electra 550 again....well when we get a bigger house anyway....

The Keymatic was also made in Australia at one point. I had always thought that both models sold in OZ where imported from the UK.

I was shocked when I found my one to find it was made at Medowbank, Sydney

In the UK, the first version Keymatic - above - was known as model 3224.
Pick your brains a little - were the Australian Keymatics known by the same model number?

Likewise with the UK model 3226 (the keymatic with the time-roundel at the left hand side of the machine) - was it 3226 in australia?

Hi Paul,

I've got a 3226 that was also made in Meadowbank.

Mark, did you get yours up and running? Mine is water tight and functions without the Impellor, I've only got a cold fill, cold wash keyplate though and have been trying to figure out how to wire a switch in to get hot.

Replacing the sump hose took a lot of creativity, PVC pipe and radiator hoses to acheive

I NEVER knew that they actually build the keymatic in Oz. All of the machines that I have seen in the past and spoken to people about were all made in the UK or I was told they were.

Now I am more peeved than ever that we didn't get the later versions.

BTW....if anyone in OZ sees a working keymatic that they don't want, please think of me...

Took it too garage plugged it in (sod safety test first)......all worked, motor brushes are going and has a slight leak from rear of tub, nout terrible so thas ok.

Which reminds me i could get the soap draw out the softener hose sits low and i cannot get it clear the lower lip on the outter soap draw, you can remove the softener bowl inside.
Maybe you have to unscrew the top plate on the soap draw

just testing my new found image resizing gizmo, I don't know I've got the hang of it yet, I'm more a mechanical, belts and motors type.

AWWWW dont yah just wanna go up and hug it .......lovely lovely..........except for the that flashy ORANGE keyplate doesnt match the machine yerr need to get rid of that Mathew

it looks lovely Mathew and the fot is good aswell.

Well, I spent a few hours with mine this morning, fitted new drive belt, the repaired inlet valve works fine, repaired pump started leaking, i think this time from the actual seal (back to the drawing board), then...........the tub outlet hose started dripping........oh and the new outlet hose.............I snagged it......

So replaced tub hose, put back later hoover pump and gaff taped the outlet hose. all good

Put it on a "heavy soil coloureds" wash, high level pre-wash... great (green light lit up...........emptied went onto the main wash (hot fill only)..............gaaaaaaa hardly any water getting through, checked everything and decided it was the inlet valve.......replaced it with another hot water inlet valveer flooding into soap draw, success wat........went through wash programme (interesting mix of gentle/normal wash action with a no agitation heating stage, then back to normal wash action with heating, oh yes main wash blue light on.........then went into rinse cycles and final long spin.............very happy that programmer etc side is fine...........

I like this machine more and more even though it is testing me at times but nothing terrible

The inlet valve problem is due to a small rubber bung that sits on the end of the steel shaft that is drawn downwards when the coil is energised, this bung swells up with age, and catches the tube it sits in so i have carefully trimmed the rubber bung on the sides so it moves freely in and out.

Well next week if i am lucky i actually do a wash in him.......yah never know
